Why It’s Important to Say No Sometimes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

As a perfectionist and people pleaser, I often find myself saying yes to everything and regretting it later when I’m stressed to the max and have a million things on my plate. Something I’ve been working on is learning to say no, which I believe is an important life skill. Learning how to create boundaries and balance the things you want to do vs what you have to do is important for living an uncomplicated and enjoyable life.

Saying no allows you to have more choice on what your life looks like and not let other people’s priorities override yours. If someone is asking you to do something during your one hour of free time during the day, it’s okay to say no even though you are technically free during that time. This is something I’m guilty of and am learning to be okay with saying no to! Although I like to be busy, setting boundaries is important to make sure I’m not over-committing to things.

Saying no also shows confidence and respect to yourself, and others will see that. A common misconception of people who say no is that they don’t want to put in the effort. It may be because they’re committed to the promises they make to themselves. This shows you respect people’s time, and that you’re trustworthy and reliable.

Learning to say no allows you to take control of your life and create your destiny. Your happiness is made up of the choices you make for yourself. Keep that in mind next time someone asks you to do something you don’t have time for!
