Why 2016 is Going to be a Great Year in Music

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

Within the first three weeks of January, there have already been monumental album releases. David Bowie’s, regretfully, final album, Blackstar, debuted on January 8th. Blackstar is labelled as an ‘art rock’, and ‘experimental jazz’ album, which brings a unique and creative sound to the New Year. While Blackstar is essentially a farewell to Bowie, it provides hope for the music industry. One of my personal favorites, Panic! At The Disco, finally put out their fifth album Death Of A Bachelor, which certainly did not disappoint. The album is filled with impressive vocal parts, synthetic rhythms, and the occasional Sinatra-esque ballad.

The albums released thus far are only the beginning of the exciting, new music of 2016. Several big ticket artists have releases planned. Elton John’s album Wonderful, Crazy, Night will be released on February 5th. Sir Elton John hasn’t released a new album since 2006, but the first three singles make the wait seem worthwhile. Among the numerous artists releasing new albums, one of the more eye catching artists is Yoko Ono. Yoko, who was most influential to the Beatle’s career, and John Lennon’s wife, will be releasing an able titled Yes I’m A Witch Too. Iggy Pop’s Post Pop Depression, is scheduled to drop on the 18th of March. Listeners can also expect new music from pop artists Lady Gaga, and Sia in 2016.

A number of familiar faces will be making appearances in this year’s Hip Hop releases. Wiz Khalifa’s album, Rolling Papers 2 will debut this summer. Both Kendrick Lamaar and J. Cole are also rumored to have album releases over the summer. R&B artist Azealia Banks also has an unscheduled album release, the album in question will be titled Business and Pleasure.

The Rock Industry is teeming with new music, much to my own excitement. Rock artists including Chevelle, Linkin Park, and The Offspring, are each expecting albums, although neither have announced dates. Funk Rock artist The Red Hot Chilli Peppers are currently producing new music, and 3 Doors Down has an album release expected for March 11. Metal artists like Danzig, Avenged Sevenfold, and Mettalica, one of the most iconic metal bands, also boast T.B.A. album releases in 2016. Asking Alexandria’s first album featuring new lead vocalist Denis Stoff will be released in March, and is entitled The Black. Based upon their previous single and live performances with Stoff, the album looks promising. Similarly, Pierce The Veil’s long awaited new album will finally be available this year. Anticipated releases from industrial artists Nine Inch Nails, and Motionless In White, are also scheduled for 2016.

Overall, 2016 is a year buzzing with new music, from various artists of different genres. Be sure to keep an ear out for even more announcements and details!
