Over the past month, I’ve become absolutely obsessed with the art of cross stitching. When I need a slow activity to wake me up in the morning, or one to unwind me after a long day, this historic hobby has been an absolute joy. It can be daunting to get into the craft, especially with all the different supplies available. Here is a list of the main materials you’ll need to start your first cross stitch project:

Patterns

The basis of any cross stitch project is the pattern. This is the guide that shows you how to create a design. Patterns can range in size, stitch count, and complexity. For a beginner project, you’ll want to start with a pattern between 3-6 inches. Make sure you don’t overwhelm yourself with anything too complex. I find most of my patterns on Etsy or Instagram, but you can also find kits in stores like Micheal’s and Joann’s. While some patterns cost money, there are many online for free. The great thing about modern cross stitch is that there are a bunch of super fun patterns from adorable animals to explicit quotes, so you’re bound to find something you love.

Aida Cloth

Aida cloth is the main type of fabric used for cross stitch. The fabric is weaved in a way that creates tiny grids that allow for the easy passage of a needle. There are different counts of aida but the most commonly used is 14-count. White aida is the easiest to see your design on, but the cloth comes in a variety of colors. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your cloth once you get the hang of stitching!

Hoops

To hold your aida taught while you stitch, you’ll need an embroidery hoop. Inexpensive bamboo hoops can be found at most craft stores. To determine what size you’ll need, read the specifications of the pattern. The pattern will say how large the final piece will be. Some pattern designers will even put in the description what size hoop best fits the design. You can buy a variety of hoops to be prepared for any size project. If you’re looking to frame your final piece or give it as a gift, you can even transfer it to a nicer hoop when you’re finished. There are ones with nicer wood, plastic, or wrapped in fabric. If you find you don’t like the way a hoop feels, you can also try a plastic or wooden cross stitch frame

Needles and Thread

Some of the final things you’ll need are needles and thread. Instead of typical sewing needles, you’ll need tapestry needles. They are a bit larger and duller, allowing you to punch through the small holes in the aida. Finally, you’ll need the colors to create your masterpiece. Most patterns will have a key with the exact color codes of the embroidery floss you’ll need. The most common brand used on patterns is DMC Thread. While it’s much easier to find the exact colors you’ll need in the DMC thread, you can also buy other brands and color match.

While it may seem like a lot of materials, you can start cross stitching for under $20 if you find the right resources, and don’t overwhelm yourself with all the fancy supplies and add-ons you see online. All these materials can be found at craft stores, and you can start cross stitching today!
