What a Real College Student Spends in a Month

Rose Keane Student Contributor, Lasell University
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

Let’s be real: Money can be really personal for everyone. And as a result, most people are pretty private about money overall. Here is a little bit about Rose, how she makes income as a college student, and how she spends it.

A little bit about Rose:

At the beginning of the summer, Rose bought her first car. This was a huge deal for her, and where a lot of my money goes to, as she has a payment plan. She also rides horses in my free time and pays for that on the first of each month. Rose also has a gym membership, that she pays for monthly. Part of my job includes possibly getting supplies for activities, and feel very fortunate that she will get reimbursed for that.

Rose’s jobs:

Rose works retail one to two days per week and work at an after school program three days a week.

Savings:

Each month, Rose money automatically transferred over from my checking account to her savings account. She really recommends doing this, as she is totally guilty of forgetting to do it. Rose can also always go back and add more, but it’s set and automatic.

*Rose did not include my monthly purchases in this, as she budget for them

The tracked my weekly purchases from Sunday to Sunday:

Sunday:

$20.26 – this was gas for my car and will last for a week

Monday:

$12.26: supplies for work: She will submit the receipt and get reimbursed for it once I submit the receipt

$27.00: Trader Joes: This was my weekly grocery needs, and consisted mostly of fresh produce. She tends to buy non-perishable essentials every other week to every three weeks.

Tuesday:

No purchases on this day

Wednesday:

$2.56 at Dunkin

Thursday:

$12.11 on Lunch that she went to with a friend

Friday:

$11 on food with a friend

Saturday:

$21.75 – sweater

$20- Target

$6 – gas for my friend who was driving

Sunday:

$10- Coffees at Dunkin for myself and my trainer

Overall, she thinks ironically, this week was light spending. Rose honestly thinks that since she knew she was tracking my spending my money this week, she was more aware of what I was spending her money on. This was really helpful, as Rose is definitely guilty of spending a lot of money on clothes and food!
