Tyler’s Take: Reliving Ariana Grande’s Regretful Hit Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

So there’s something that I need to get off my chest. With Ariana Grande’s most recent release of her latest single, “Dangerous Woman” I think it’s important to not forget where the Victorious pop star started.

For those of you who may not know, Miss Grande released a truly inspiring song, ‘Put Your Hearts Up,’ back in 2011 where she encourages human beings to “put our heads together” and “put our hearts up.” Basically, she’s singing about being a kind-hearted soul and, as individuals, to spread love towards one another. Mind you that this is coming from the girl who thought it’d be cute and acceptable to lick donuts on a bakery display, which she wasn’t planning on buying, and to allow following customers to eat those said donuts.

However, there’s just one set of lyrics form “Put Your Hearts Up” that don’t really sit right with me:

“Can’t Resurrect Gandhi, resurrect King

But if we put our heads together

We can do anything…”

Talk about powerful stuff. I don’t want to speak on behalf of Mohammad Gandhi or Martin Luther King, Jr., but I just would really like to know their thoughts about their humanitarian work being accredited in this low-budge Enchanted movie knock-off. If only the Half Up, Half Down pony tail diva could specify on what exactly it is she would like to change in the world then I am sure we would be more than happy to put our hearts together.

Now, I know I’m being hard Miss Grande but I know I am not the only one who holds this song against her. According to Sugar Scape, back in 2015 the pop star actually regrets this song. She believes that it resonates more with her character, Cat, from Victorious than it does with herself. I sense that she is trying to pass the blame of this brutal song onto a fictional character that she portrayed in Victorious. Shame.

Listen, I love this diva, as much as the next Ariana Grande fan, I just think that this iconic pop-culture jam should not go unrecognized. As the “The Way” singer climbs her way up to A-lister status in Hollywood, it is so important that she stays humble and remembers where it is that she started.
