Top Local Thrift Stores to Shop If You’re Ready to Give Up Waste

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

There’s no hiding the fact that fast fashion has taken over America and everyone wants the latest trends right off the runway at a discounted price almost immediately after they see them.  What people don’t know, however, is that because of fast fashion and stores that overturn their stock weekly, millions of pieces of clothes are left without a home. In fact, in 2013, it was stated that the fashion industry caused 15.1 tons of textile waste.  With all the known facts, it makes it harder morally to be a part of the waste problem and people find themselves switching from fast fashion to thrifting instead. This not only saves a few bucks, but also excludes you as another number contributing to the waste problem.  Looking to make the switch, but don’t know how to start? Here are the best thrift stores locally, right in Boston!

Garment District

The Garment District in Cambridge is one of the best known thrift shops in the area, famous for its pay-by-the-pound pile. Yes, you heard that right. It’s a huge pile of clothes that you have to sift through, and it only costs $2/ lb usually, and $1/ lb as a special deal on Fridays.  It may sound strange, but the pile is normally packed with people eager to see what they could possibly find in the mysterious pile. Personally, some of my favorite clothing pieces were found in the famous pile.

Urban Renewals

If you’re looking to shop a bargain, but don’t want to sift through a pile, Urban Renewals in Allston is THE place to shop for best bargains, and everything is neatly sorted into rows.  Individual prices rarely go over $5 and most clothing pieces have color-coded tags that signal high-off sale items each day. This warehouse-sized store holds anything you could need, women’s, men’s, and children clothing, shoes, books, and housewares, all at extremely discounted prices!

Revolve Boutique

Looking to shop secondhand, but still want that high end, right off the runway look?  Revolve on Newbury Street sells high end used fashion at discounted prices and has just about any brand you could imagine including Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Burberry, and more.  Not only can you buy your high end clothes here, but you can also sell them too!

Buffalo Exchange

Buffalo Exchange, located in Allston, provides cool and edgy clothes at the much wanted discounted price.  These styles are really hot and in high demand, so this one has stayed a favorite. They offer brands like American Apparel and Urban Outfitters and they do a good job at making sure their pieces are on-trend and from the current season.
