A Starting Guide on Layering This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

Layering is a very important skill to have when you’re styling in the winter. As with any fashion, the wearer can decide what they like the best. However, I have listed some of my favorite essentials that help me to layer.

  1. You need basics. This is an obvious step to some, but it’s important to have a strong foundation before you begin to build on it. Good basics could be a tee, long sleeve, or another shirt.
  2. Next is a sweatshirt. I prefer hoodies because the hood provides extra warmth if necessary, while also adding another visual layer.
  3.  Vests! I used to despise vests until I discovered their versatility. Getting a vest in a core color such as black or white can help tie together outfits.
  4. Jackets, if you choose. Having a solid winter jacket can add a finishing touch to an outfit, especially if you have one in a bright color or expressive pattern. Some of my favorites are cheetah print or hot pink!
  5. Hats? I am personally not a big fan of hats (for comfort reasons) but I still think they are very cute! Similar to a hood, they add another visual layer to the outfit.

My last tip is to use colors in the same family. Even if they aren’t all the exact same, having a monochromatic look ties each element together. If you choose to add in a pattern, it can still tie in with the other pieces within your color scheme.

Remember to stay bundled up and add a mask to any outfit you wear!
