Seven Things To Do on Valentine’s Day For Those Who Hate Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

Valentine’s Day comes around once a year and the truth is, you either hate it or love it. Of course, that can depend on a broad range of factors such as if you have a significant other or not. If you’re like me, I despise Valentine’s Day. I think it is overrated but hey, maybe I’d have a different opinion if I wasn’t single! So I came up with a list of things you can do this Valentine’s Day that has nothing to do with Valentine’s Day.

1. Hang out with friends

This one is a given for those who are single on Valentine’s Day but a fun night with friends is all you need sometimes. Though this may be difficult this year considering we are in a pandemic, you can always have a Zoom night with your besties or hang out with those you live with.

2. Watch a movie… or a few

Again, this one a given but whatever you do, don’t watch a rom-com! Literally, watch anything else if you want to keep your mind off of Valentine’s Day. Though the majority of movies do have characters with love interests, watching a horror movie vs a rom-com makes a world of a difference. If you have the whole night free, make it a marathon!

3. Make some art

When I’m bored and want to get my mind off of something, I usually use that energy to create. This can be anything from painting to drawing to writing. Basically any way you can express yourself! Just be yourself with no expectations and create.

4. Cook or bake something

Resorting to food is one of the most cliche ways to distract yourself but you can take this as an opportunity to try a new recipe you’ve been wanting to! Whenever I am down I like to bake some cookies or cupcakes from scratch and give them to close friends or family so they don’t just sit in my kitchen and wait to be eaten!

5. Treat yo’ self

Spend the night thinking about you, and only you! Run a bath, listen to some music, do a face mask, follow a viral workout, whatever makes you feel good! Or you could always literally treat yourself and indulge in some online shopping.

6. Catch up with someone you miss

A good way to pass time is to call up a loved one you haven’t spoken to in a while. Time with family and friends can always be fulfilling so call up your friend from high school you haven’t talked to in a few months! You never know what may come from a simple phone call. You may never know the effect it has on the person on the other end too. Maybe they were feeling lonely and all they needed was to talk to a friend.

7. Makeover!

Put on a cute outfit, do what makes you feel good whether that’s curling your hair or applying makeup, and take some bomb new Insta pics! There is no doubt dressing up and making yourself all pretty gives you more confidence as well as something to do to pass time.

Overall, Valentine’s Day really doesn’t have to be as hyped up as it is every year. If you feel bad about not having romantic Valentine’s Day plans, don’t! Plenty of people are in the same boat or they just simply disregard the holiday! So if V-day bums you out, stay away from the red and pink and put yourself first.
