Old, New, Latest, and Greatest Films with Emalee: Dumplin
Welcome to our weekly movie reviews with our writer and President, Emalee, where we are going to review the classics and the latest and greatest in film. So grab some popcorn and let’s see if this movie is worth going to go see. Do not worry there will be *no spoilers* in this article.
This week’s pick up for review is ‘Dumplin.”
“ Dumplin” is a Netflix Original that was released on December 7, 2018, and was directed by Anne Fletcher. The movie stars Danielle Macdonald who plays Willowdean a plus-size teenage daughter of a former beauty queen (Jennifer Aniston) and let’s be real Jennifer Aniston never disappoints. Willowdean signs up for her mom’s pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow her footsteps, revolutionizing the pageant in their small Texas town. Mostly everyone calls Willowdean, Will, but her mother calls her Dumplin. Will spends much of her childhood primarily raised and taught by her Aunt Lucy, who introduces her to Ellen Dryver, who becomes her best friend. Lucy instills a love of Dolly Parton and self-confidence in Will. Will and her mom are not that close most of her childhood because of her mom’s various time commitments. Will tends to act out to get her mother’s attention. Her mother is a former miss teen pageant winner in their town and continues to coach other teenage girls along with being very involved in the pageant. Will figures out the only way to get her mother’s attention are to join the pageant. This might seem like another cheesy movie, but it is not. Viewers see Will transform from a low confidence teenager who is not that nice to others because of it to confident in her own skin teenager who makes amends with her mother and friends. It was a great laugh to watch with friends with of course a little love interest, but inspiring to remember to be confident and kind to others.
