NYFW Unveils the Top Trending Styles That You’ll See All Fall 2020

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

With New York Fashion Week having happened last week, it’s only appropriate to discuss the next trends in style for fall 2020. Since autumn is arguably the most anticipated and inventive season for fashion, I’ve compiled a list of some of the top and most prevalent looks that were seen on the runway this year, in an attempt to inspire all the fashionistas out there.

The first trend swooped over the runway leaving these models dressed to kill! Capes are this season’s edgy, vampire-like jacket substitute, in all sorts of styles to keep you just as fabulous as you are warm. Most often seen in thick, black, satin-like materials, there were plenty of fun cuts and bright colors for anyone’s shape or style.

Speaking of jacket substitutes, this second more boho style is back: ponchos! For the girl who’s tired of preppy button-ups or ultra-tailored coats, this loose, drapey layer might be the garment for you. It was seen on the runway is not only eye-catching neons but even more subdued earth tones to match your outfit no matter what you’re wearing. Takedown your ponchos from the back of your closets ladies; this trend is going nowhere fast.

Let’s talk color: most unexpectedly, powder blue and cocoa brown showered the runway this week. Cinderella blue walked down the runway (all shoes intact I may add) in nearly every possible garment: from tulle dresses to leather suits. Pair it with the chocolate brown Bevza jacket that made our hearts melt or let it shine on its own! Either way, it’s all about tranquil colors this year.

Hardly anyone born past 1970 has been able to avoid the age-old question when you walk into a family function with ripped jeans on: did you buy your jeans like that or did a tiger maul you? Well, prepare yourself for the new question: is your shirt supposed to be missing a sleeve or were you mauled by a bear? Two trends we can’t stop talking about this season are cut-outs and intentionally missing sleeves; I loved the trend so much I bought myself a one-sleeved shirt from New York and Company just the other day!

Just like the end of a fashion show, we’re going to end this article with a bang: wedding style. Let’s start from the top; thin face veils dominated the runway this season, even in outfits unrelated to the wedding scene. It made for a very grunge scene this year, revealing that yet another grunge wave will be overflowing clothes racks this fall. But on a more romantic note, the dresses themselves (being designed more and more by ready-to-wear designers) have followed trends popular in every-day wear but never seen walking down the aisle. There were dresses with cut-outs in the waist, single sleeve pieces, as well as two-piece bandeau styles.
