Movies You Didn’t Know Were Being Turned Into Musicals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

Movie buffs and fashionistas rejoiced when it was recently announced that The Devil Wears Prada was going to get the Broadway treatment, with a score by Elton John. This trend is nothing new. Other movie-to-musical adaptations include Hairspray, Footloose, Kinky Boots and Heathers, but did you know that there are even more cult classics planned to hit the stage in the near future?

    Pretty Woman:

Before his death in 2016, film producer director and writer, Gary Marshall, announced that he was working on a musical adaptation of Pretty Woman. Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance were named to write the score and Jerry MItchell will bring his own peppy twist as choreographer. Marshall’s death hasn’t stopped the project and it is expected to have a spring or fall 2017 release.

    Mean Girls:

The woman behind the original 2004 classic, Tina Fey, wrote a musical adaption of the movie with composer husband, Jeff Richmond. Nell Benjamin, the lyricist behind Legally Blonde, wrote the lyrics while Richmond did the score. Lorne Michaels, the producer of the movie, will take on the same role for the musical. It is expected to have a fall 2017 release.

Clueless:

For all you Clueless fans, don’t worry! This adaption will certainly not be a full-on Monet. Original writer and director, Amy Heckerling, also worked on the musical adaption. Don’t get too excited though, this adaption is still in its workshop phase and will not be debuting anytime soon. Heckerling wrote the musical in 2014 and there are still finishing touches that need to be added. Hopefully one day we’ll see Cher, Dionne and their crew hit the stage!
