As we all know, beloved actor Matthew Perry unfortunately passed away on October 28th, 2023. He was a lively, ambitious, and genuine person, and was taken from the world too soon. Although he truly was so much more than just Chandler Bing from the sitcom Friends, I want to focus on some of the world’s favorite Chandler Bing moments as an amazing friend. He has a way of making me laugh hysterically, no matter how many times I rewatch the show. Chandler has so many great moments on Friends that show his true friendship and love for each of the characters.
We all want a friend who will do absolutely anything with us without judgment. Chandler was often good at being this friend. In one episode, Rachel gains an obsession with cheesecake from a specific bakery. She has one cheesecake left, but it falls on the floor in the middle of the hallway. Rachel decides she does not care and sits on the floor eating the cake. Rather than judging her, Chandler decides to sit with her and eat the cake because it is making her happy.
Chandler tells Monica he Loves Her
Do we all remember the infamous Thanksgiving episode where Monica wears a raw turkey on her head? If you do not, Monica tries to cheer Chandler up by dancing with a turkey on her head. It is absolutely hilarious, but Chandler’s response is even better. At this point in the show, the two are dating, but they have not yet said “I love you.” In this moment when Monica is showing her funny side, Chandler decides to say those three words. It is truly a special scene because Chandler expresses that he loves Monica both when she is serious and when she is silly.
Chandler and Joey’s friendship is unmatched, and what everyone hopes to have in a friendship. There is one episode where Chandler wronged Joey, so he stayed in a wooden box, silent, until Joey would talk to him again. Even though Chandler hurt Joey’s feelings, in the end, he did everything he could to make Joey happy again.
I have always had a soft spot for Chandler because he is able to make me uncontrollably laugh, but has really sentimental moments in the show as well. One of these moments was in his proposal to Monica. Chandler made sure that his proposal to Monica was perfect, with candles, music, and all. He took the time to know and understand everything that Monica loves, to ask her in the most special way.
This was one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in this television series. When Rachel decides she is leaving for London, she wishes to say goodbye to each of her friends individually. Chandler goes into the room saying “I just want to say that I love you, and I’m gonna miss you, and I’m so sad that you’re leaving.” This scene is extremely genuine and it makes me cry each time I watch the show. Although Chandler was not always the best at expressing his emotions, he had the best sentimental moments in Friends.
It pains me that we have lost such a wonderful actor, man, and soul. Matthew Perry always did an amazing job of making me laugh when I was down. Although he passed away, we have Chandler Bing to stay with us as our friend.
