Lasell College Love Your Melon Crew

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

I’m sure almost everyone has heard of the incredible brand “Love Your Melon” and have seen someone rocking one of the beanies around campus. “Love Your Melon” is more than just a cool and fashionable beanie brand, they are a company with a mission; and with every purchase made you are helping a child with cancer. The company was started by college students that wanted to give American children battling cancer a hat. They have furthered their mission and are now “partnered with the Pinky Swear Foundation to provide immediate support for children battling cancer and with CureSearch for Children’s Cancer to fund research initiatives to beat childhood cancer completely.” (Love Your Melon Website). Because of their ongoing success they have altered their giving methods, which now includes donating 50% of net proceeds of every product sold to the Pinky Swear Foundation and CureSearch. They have already been able to commit to giving 45,000 children with cancer a hat, which is equal to the amount of US children battling cancer. The hats are donated by their college ambassadors who dress up as superheros.

Love Your Melon was started by college students Zach and Brian at University of St. Thomas, with “a mission to improve the lives of children battling cancer since October 22nd, 2012.” As a college student, you can do more than just buy a Love Your Melon product, through the campus crew program. Lasell College is a part of the over 557 different schools that has ambassadors for the program. The students raise awareness for childhood cancer, represent the brand on campus through promotions and sales events, and personally engage with Love Your Melon charitable programming initiatives, which may include hospital visits. When the founder of the Lasell College Love Your Melon Crew was asked why she wanted to start the crew she said, “I started Love Your Melon at Lasell College because I wanted to raise awareness of pediatric cancer. I think that Love Your Melon is a wonderful organization that gives therapy to children. I wanted to be apart of this organization and bring the Lasell community into the organization with me.” She was also asked how she was able to get the club started on campus in which she replied, “The crew got started by me applying to be a crew captain and being accepted through Love Your Melon. Once we were accepted, I needed to build my crew and work with the office of students activities to become a recognized club.”
