Movies are a perfect escape from reality, so many people, myself included, are huge fans of them. Because of my love for watching movies, I decided to create a list of interesting statistics about films. I hope you will grab some popcorn and enjoy this read.

Statistic #1: A Little Over Half of Americans Watched a Movie in a Movie Theater in the Past Year

According to a survey taken in the summer of 2025, 53% of Americans had been to a movie theater in the prior year. On the other hand, 7% of Americans have not watched a movie in a theater in their entire lives.

Statistic #2: American Men and American Women are Almost Equally Likely to Have Seen A Film in Theaters in the Past Year

According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, as of 2025, 53% of American men had said that they saw a movie in theaters in the past year. Similarly, 54% of American women said that they had done the same thing.

Statistic #3: The highest-grossing movie in America in 2025 was A Minecraft Movie (2025)

The highest-grossing movie in the US in 2025 was A Minecraft Movie (2025). This film was directed by Jared Hess. The second-highest-grossing one was Lilo and Stitch (2025), a film directed by Dean Fleischer Camp. The third-highest-grossing one was Superman (2025), a movie directed by James Gunn. The fourth highest-grossing one was Jurassic World: Rebirth (2025), which was directed by James Gunn. The fifth highest-grossing one was Zootopia 2 (2025), which was directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush.

Statistic #4: Adults between the ages of 18 and 29 are More Likely to have seen a Movie in the theaters in the Past Year

As of 2025, 67% of adults between the ages of 18 and 29 had been to a movie theater and watched a movie there in the past year. For comparison, 60% of adults aged 30-49 had done so. So have 48% of adults aged 50-64 and 39% of those 65 and older.

Statistic #5: In 2024, China Sold More Movie Tickets than Any Other Country

In 2024, China sold more movie tickets than any other country at 1.012 billion tickets. The country that sold the second most tickets was India, with 890 million tickets. In third was the US with 694 million tickets. Mexico was in fourth with 217 million tickets. Finally, in fifth place, France sold 173 million movie tickets.

Statistic #6: In 2024, Disney Made More Money in Box Office Revenue than Any Other Movie Studio that Year

In 2024, Disney made more money in box office revenue than any other movie studio that year, with 5.46 billion US dollars. In second place, Universal made 3.75 billion US dollars that year. Warner Bros. was in third with 3.28 billion US dollars. Next up is Sony in fourth place with 2.42 billion US dollars. Finally, in fifth place is Paramount with 1.72 billion US dollars.

Statistic #7: More Americans Prefer to Watch Action and Adventure Movies than Any Other Genre

As of 2025, 32% of Americans preferred to watch action and adventure movies, which is more than any other genre. 19% preferred to watch comedy films, making it the second most popular genre among Americans. In third place were horror movies, with 18% of Americans preferring them. Fourth were dramas with 14%. In a close fourth were sequels with 12%. Finally, in fifth place were animated movies at 5%.

Statistic #8: More Gen Z Americans Prefer to Watch Action and Adventure Movies than Any Other Genre

As of 2025, action and adventure is the most popular film genre among American zoomers, with  40% of them preferring to watch movies of this genre. The second most popular one is horror with 32%. In third place are sequels with 13%. Comedy films are in fourth place with 7%. In fifth place are dramas with 5%. Finally, in fifth place are animated movies, which 2% of American zoomers prefer to other genres.

Statistic #9: Gen Z Americans are More Likely to Discover New and Upcoming Movies through Social Media than Other Ways

As of 2025, 47% of American zoomers learn about new and upcoming movies through social media, making it the most common way they find out about them. 25% discover them through movie trailers. 13% do so through streaming services. In a close fourth, ads, both online and on TV, help 12% of American zoomers learn about new and upcoming films. At a distant fifth, 3% of them learn about these movies through word of mouth.

Statistic #10: Samuel L. Jackson was the Highest-grossing Lead Actor of All Time in the US and Canada

As of November 2025, Samuel L. Jackson had the highest cumulative box office revenue in the US and Canada of all time at 5.85 billion US dollars. Scarlet Johansson is in second place with 5.68 billion US dollars. In third place is Robert Downey Jr. with 5.47 billion US dollars. Chris Pratt is in fourth with 5.36 billion US dollars. Finally, Tom Hanks is in fifth place with 5.21 billion US dollars.
