I Tried Ear Seeding for Migraines So You Wouldn’t Have Too

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

Over 36 million, Americans suffer from migraines, and while allopathic medicine can be an answer for some people, others get left behind. However, ear seeding has been an alternative gaining alot of buzz recently as an at-home acupuncture treatment from everything to anxiety, depression, migraines, and other pain conditions.

Ear seeds are placed in your ear on pressure points to act as acupuncture without needles. They need to be pressed on every few hours to activate the pressure points. They’re held with waterproof tape to the pressure point for up to a week, though I tried 5 days. This is a part of traditional Chinese medicine called auriculotherapy. The seeds traditionally come from a plant called Vaccaria, though the seeds may vary in America due to accessibility.

I bought the multi-condition ear seed kit from Amazon for $9.99 to test it out. It is pretty simple to apply, you just need to clean your ear, pull the tab with a tweezer- you want to be careful not to pull the seed off. You then apply it to your ear and use the acupuncture tool to press down on it.

I think that the hardest part is correctly placing it on the correct pressure point. I looked at a bunch of charts but the placement was difficult and took a few tries. If you put it in the wrong place it won’t work. The 1st time, I guess was my lucky try because it worked right away. The second time I didn’t realize I placed it the wrong way until I noticed it wasn’t working. However, if you’re worried about the placement you can always get it professionally placed.

Overall, I saw great changes in my migraines and it greatly relieved my pain. I would suggest other people with migraines to try this. Your results depend on user error and it’s easy to make a mistake in an area so small.
