How The Term Cheugy Encourages Fast Fashion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

If you have a Tiktok then there is no doubt that you have heard the word cheugy while scrolling through the FYP within the past few months. But what does cheugy mean and how doe sit impact our enviroment?

Fashion cycles are becoming more and more rapid with the use of social media. Just think about the tiktok coconut girl trend that lasted a month, maybe two tops. The word cheugy is used to refer to out of date styles that were trendy a few years ago. The term has been mainly used by Zillenials who call out people’s fashion is being outdated. If you still wear skinny jeans in the age of mom jeans and oversized jeans you are cheugy and don’t even think about wearing those black booties you’ve had forever.

With social media, people feel the pressure to fit into every fashion trend but these fashion trends move faster than people can buy them. The term chuegy pressures people to go out and buy clothing to follow every fashion trend to avoid being bullied online. What this term really does is encourage overconsumption.

Fast fashon is already negatively affecting our environment negatively. The best thing we can do for our enviorment is to not to buy trendy fast fashion pieces, and thrift instead, or choose intentional pieces you know you’ll wear. Who cares if it’s considered out of style if you are confident in it?

The one take away thaty you can take away from this article- Don’t buiy into every trend.
