Growing up, I wasn’t a particularly picky eater, but it’s safe to say I had favorites. There were snacks I would always gravitate to, and top choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Now that I’m 19, not much has changed as far as what I like, but these are 3 food that I’ve always liked and remind me of childhood.

The first was the way I had peanut butter and apple slices. I was always very particular about my apples. I like green apples that are crunchy and a little sour. For the peanut butter, it was always creamy. However, since the serving size for peanut butter was 2 tablespoons, and I wanted to dip every apple, this is what my mom did for me. Mixed the peanut butter with vanilla yogurt. She swirled the two together to make a dip for me and I had it all the time. Great for breakfast or a snack, this is still one of my favorites and always makes me think of being in elementary school.

The second food that has stayed the same is my subway sandwich. I feel like this is universal for a lot of people, and everyone orders the same thing every time and just adds toppings as they get older. Since I played soccer and would beg for the subway on the way home, my order of wheat bread with turkey, cheese, tomato, lettuce, and black olives has never changed. And it has tasted the same since I first got it, and always delicious.

The last food is my mom’s teriyaki salmon. Growing up, she was vegetarian and always did the cooking, but when we did have meat, it was usually chicken or fish. The teriyaki salmon made it to the dinner table at least once a week for probably 8 years, maybe more. It was a family favorite and she always served it with broccoli. To this day, salmon is one of my favorite foods, and whenever it’s on sale we’re sure to pick some up.

Having nostalgia through food has always been something I really enjoyed, as food is really personal since we all like different things. Additionally, the idea of sharing it with my family when we all had busy schedules was something we all looked forward to.
