Explaining The Princess Diana Craze Sweeping The Nation

If you haven't seen the latest craze that swept you're For You page on Tik Tok, or your Twitter feed about the latest season of The Crown on Netflix, you may have well been living under a rock. The Crown is a historical drama streaming television series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The series starts with Queen Elizabeth (or when it starts just Princess Elizabeth) and her husband Phillip. Proceeding with the death of her father, King George, Elizabeth takes the crown at the age of 27.

As seasons one through three focus on the queens growing up and adjusting to her role as queen, season four was the long-awaited introduction of one of the most famous royals in the world: Princess Diana. Princess Diana was married into the royal family to Prince Charles, who was first in line to the throne. As the fourth season dives into the beginning of their marriage and lives together. The season was the moment everyone was waiting for. The reintroduction of the most beloved princess in history. But you may be wondering, “what was so special about this princess?” and “why was she so beloved?”. This is fairly simple to answer.

For one, Princess Diana was fairly young when she wedded Prince Charles. She was just 21 years old while he was 12 years her senior. Everyone loved her for some of the most simple reasons such as she seemed an exceptional mother to her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. Another reason was that since she was so young and on top of the latest fashion trends, she was seen as relatable and a fresh, kind face to represent the royal family. She was so kind and approachable at all of her public gatherings.

One of the most profound actions she performed was hugging and shaking hands with the less fortunate without gloves on. It was a staple to wear gloves whenever interacting with the public, a rule the princess decided to break. She was a modern teenager in the eyes of the public, which made the public adore her.  That alone didn't keep her in the spotlight, but also her very public divorce from Prince Charles after 15 years of marriage, and her living life with many different suitors. The Crown couldn't have picked a better actress to portray the famous princess. As you watch the series and glance at your phone to compare the two, you’ll be astonished by the striking similarities.

Princess Diana was such a modern and much-needed breath of fresh air from the stuffiness that accumulated from the royal family. Her short life in the spotlight impacted so many people and gave women such empowerment in themselves. So do yourself a favor and binge watch The Crown on Netflix!
