Dexter Show Review: My Honest Thoughts

Dexter is a tv show that came out in 2006 but still continues to be in my thoughts to this day. To set the scene, Dexter (the main character) is a blood splatter analyst for the police department in Miami, Florida. Not only is he a blood splatter analyst, but he’s (spoiler alert)  also a serial killer. To backtrack a bit, when Dexter was very young his mother was murdered in front of him with a chainsaw, and as you can imagine, this left him mentally not well. Fast forward to his teens where he had a thirst for blood and his adoptive father (the cop who found him in a pool of his mother’s blood) taught him a set of rules to kill by. He must only kill people who deserve it. On the show, he has a girlfriend named Rita and a sister named Debra. There; now you’re all caught up.

I have watched this show multiple times and enjoy the watch each time but that does not mean I do not have some qualms with it. Most importantly would be the fact that Dexter should have been caught and arrested about 100 times within the course of the show. I understand that he is the basis of the series and the series would end without him, but it was far too unrealistic. He was always out late into the night, disappearing, and for the most part no one ever questioned it. His sister Deb was also a large part of why the show was not a perfect ten out of ten for me. She was annoying, selfish, and all around unpleasant. Her storyline took up too much screen time and was painful to watch for the most part. Those are the two most important problems with the show, in my view.

The show as a whole is entertaining, funny at times, and rich in plot. There are 8 seasons and not at one point did I think “When will they stop dragging this on?”. The show was so popular when it came out and the fan base was so strong that they recently released a show called Dexter: New Blood, which showcases Dexter many years later and what that life looks like for him. I would highly recommend watching this show and I would formally give it an 8/10.
