Last week, I had the privilege of attending an advanced screening of the new movie, Amsterdam through HerCampus. I have been interested in this movie since the trailer was released. I was more than excited to watch it in the ultimate viewing experience, the movie theater. When the lights dimmed, I was in for a treat for the next two hours. I struggle to give movies a definitive ranking because we all have our own criteria. However, I thought the movie was fun and fabulous. I would recommend it to a friend (or reader)!

Amsterdam takes place in the 1930s, and quickly hooks you with a murder. We are introduced to two best friends, whose general from World War I has been killed. The first friend is a doctor, Burt, portrayed by Christian Bale. The other is a lawyer named Harold, played by John David Washington. They quickly learn there is a conspiracy going on as they are framed for the murder of the general’s daughter (played by Taylor Swift). The movie then flashbacks to their service in the war and their connection with a french nurse named Valerie. The nurse, portrayed by Margot Robbie, quickly becomes their friend and romantic interest of Harold. The trio spends a nostalgic, youthful time in Amsterdam after the war. They sadly all part ways, and we are caught up back in the 1930s. They then have to scheme to prove themselves innocent, reunite with Valerie, and stop the hidden antagonist, the committee of the fives.
When I say this movie is star-studded, I am not lying. The movie features Rami Malek, Robert De Niro, Anya Taylor Joy, among other members of Hollywood’s brightest. All of these performances really make the movie enjoyable. The humor, storyline, and sentimentalism make the film fun to watch. I believe the only shortcoming of the film was its length. It was unnecessarily drawn out at some points, which made it have lulls. However, its ending really saved it. It is an amazing story of friendship mixed in with a classic murder mystery. This movie is a perfect fall watch as the months grow cooler.
