Why We Should Stop Hating On Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

Reflecting on the Valentine’s holiday that has just passed has led me to a few realisations.

Yes, I agree that it is a capitalist and overcommercialised holiday.

Yes, I agree that if you have a significant other, you should feel appreciated on the other 364 days of the year.

And yes, you may feel excluded if you don’t have a romantic partner to spend the day with.

However, we need to take Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to tell the people we love how we are grateful for them.

Life is too short to be bitter and hateful on a day that should be about celebrating who we have in our lives, rather than those we don’t.

Whilst Valentine’s Day is primarily about couples, it doesn’t have to be.

Whether you spent the evening at a fancy restaurant, watched a film with your best friends or enjoyed a takeaway pizza, if you value your support network, you can make Valentine’s the best it possibly can be.
