I cry at everything. I cry at the news. I cry when I see stray cats. I cry when other people cry. I cried when I walked down the aisle as a bridesmaid at my cousin’s wedding and last week I cried when my two flatmates started dancing to ‘You and me’ by Penny and the Quarters. I’m essentially a broken tap, occasionally running out of water long enough for someone to refill me so I can cry again. And when it comes to engaging with the fictional realm- I am much worse. There are a dozens of tear-stained books in my arsenal and I have vivid memories of my teenage years spent lying alone in my bed, my pillow wet with self-indulgent tears, sobbing unattractively at my television at films I had chosen in full-knowledge that they would make me feel that way. If you are anything like me and secretly welcome the cathartic release that a tear-jerker provides, then you’ll already be familiar with films most likely to make you cry until you can’t breathe. But, if you’re new to this particular brand of masochism, here is a list of ten films guaranteed to make your heart explode.

NUMBER 10-

TITANIC

NUMBER 9-

SCHINDLER’S LIST

NUMBER 8-

I AM SAM

NUMBER 7-

THE NOTEBOOK

NUMBER 6-

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOW PT II (Simply because it was the end of an era!)

NUMBER 5-

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE

NUMBER 4-

LOVE STORY

The saddest quote of the film:

What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died? That she was beautiful and brilliant? That she loved Mozart and Bach, the Beatles, and me?

NUMBER 3-

STEPMOM

NUMBER 2-

THE LION KING

NUMBER 1-

HATCHI

The saddest film on the planet. So sad it wasn’t enjoyable. DO NOT WATCH. Only on this list as a warning to others. As painful as dipping a cauterised wound in a bath of salt.
