This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

Enjoy a quick review of Marvel’s sequel, Guardian’s of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with an attempt at avoiding too many spoilers!

The much anticipated follow up was released on the 28th April and is still holding the number 1 spot on the UK box office, reportedly taking just over £27 million in UK theatres alone!

Marvel’s sequel opens with favourites Peter/Star Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Drax (Dave Bautista) and Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) defeating a weird monster alien over one of the most joyful opening sequences I’ve seen in a long time (a very cute Baby Groot decides to have an impromptu dance to Mr Blue Sky rather than help his friends). This witty sequence sets the tone for the rest of the film that is fun, quirky, self-aware and full of charm.

While the film’s plot lacks some of the originality of its predecessor, the underlying theme of family and the actors’ charismatic performances keep you rooting for them, making the film relatable despite its intergalactic setting. In Vol. 2 we meet Peter’s father, Ego, a celestial kind-of-god-like-being (“God with a small g”) who is introduced saving the Guardians from attack, revealing he has been searching for Peter after his kidnap by villain Yondu as a child. Though, naturally, all is not as it seems.

Meanwhile tensions are also high between the Guardians as Peter becomes frustrated that Gamora doesn’t commit to their ‘unspoken’ relationship, Nebula returns to antagonise her sister and Rocket’s criminal side has disastrous results. Meanwhile, Drax brings comic relief (though not to say that the ‘tenser’ moments aren’t filled with humorous dialogue), especially when he insults new addition Mantis, Ego’s emphatic assistant, though lovingly done and much to her delight. There’s also a cameo from a beloved 80s star!

This action-packed, sequel will have you laughing throughout and is full of memorable one-liners that demand to be quoted; you’ll leave the theatre calling someone a trash panda. Not forgetting the incredible soundtrack that is just as perfect as the first film’s (I’m not ashamed to admit I wrote this listening to it).

I’ve watched the film with my family and with friends and its evident Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a favourite for everyone and anyone. I’m sure it’s available in every cinema across the UK, but Lancasterians (is this your name?), the Vue cinema’s tickets are a mega deal at just £4.99!
