Campus Celebrity- Megan Rose Readman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

Name: Megan Rose Readman

Age: 21

College: Furness

Course of study: Psychology

Hobbies: Dance

What styles of dance do you do and how long have you been dancing for? : At uni I mainly do jazz and ballet. However at home I did ballet, jazz, lyrical and contemporary and also tap when I was very young. I started ballet when I was about 6 ish and gradually added the other classes and have been dancing ever since.

What is your position on the exec of LUDanS? President

What does this role entail? As president I am the primary representative of the society to the union, university and external bodies. I also coordinate and oversee all activities of the society and the exec. This includes booking our spacing, organising our timetable and chairing exec meetings.

How long have you been president and a part of the society? I have been president following Roses last year so around 7 months or so, but I have been a member of the society since the start of my first year (I literally joined at the freshers fair).

What do you do as a society? As a pretty big society we do many things. We have a competition squad that members audition for. This team trains throughout the year and competes at several interuniversity competitions. This year we will be competing at Durham, York and Sheffield and obviously ROSES!

We also run general and specialist classes every week. These are in a range of styles and are run by members of the society. Anyone and everyone is welcome to these classes, whether you have danced before or not, our teachers tailor the classes to the ability of the members. The specialist classes are new this year and we have some really cool styles being taught including Seychelles dance, Chinese dance, musical theatre, lyrical and pointe work.

Every year the society puts on a show in the second term, this is such a fun exciting event to be part of and really brings the society closer together. Every member is able to participate and propose to choreograph in the show. We also have a performance squad who perform at various events on campus and in the community for example the recent fireworks event in Lancaster square and the upcoming Christmas markets. The society also works throughout the year to fundraise for a specific charity, this year The Teenage Cancer Trust and Defying Dementia have been chosen as our charities. This year we have some particularly exciting events to fundraise for these charities including a charity ball and a skydive. Finally the society also puts on regular socials including nights out, nights in and this year a trip to see a musical.

Give 5 reasons why people should try dancing or join LUDanS: Over summer we did a similar thing to this on our social media pages so the following reasons of why to join LUDanS are coming from our members not just me.

  1. You’ll make friends for life. Whether it’s bonding at a taster session, laughing at each other during rehearsals or gaining a whole new team of friends through comp squads, our LUDanSers build friendships that last much longer than the length of your degree.
  2. You become part of a family that can and will support you through uni life and all that it entails
  3. You get the chance to explore and learn about other cultures. We are proud to have such a diverse range of members and this means that we are able to offer workshops in a variety of cultural styles as well as the traditional styles available on a weekly basis
  4. It combines exercise and fun! Lots of us can’t stand the idea of going for a run in the rain, but weekly classes give you the exercise you need to keep yourself fit and healthy – especially if you’re eating a diet of pasta and Sultans!
  5. You’ll become a member of one of the biggest societies on campus! This means there’s always something happening, from weekly classes to rehearsals for both campus performances and competitions – not to mention fab socials!
