Affordable Places to Eat In and Around Lancaster!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

1. The Plough

This pub is situated in Galgate – the village just before Lancaster University, coming from the M6– a short 20-minute walk from Lonsdale College. You can use your purple card on weekdays and on Sundays after 3pm and get 15% off your food! Portions are huge and the food is good quality, serving food such as: burgers, baguettes, fish and chips, steak, nachos, jacket potatoes, soup, gammon, desserts and amazing Sunday roast dinners!

2. The Three Mariners

The Three Mariners is similar to the Plough, selling similar kinds of foods of reasonable pricing, yet they, sadly, do not accept purple cards for discount. When I visited, I chose the French burger which was only about £8 for potato wedges, salad and a huge burger with brie and garlic mushrooms with a side of garlic sauce. It is located near the bottom end of Lancaster city, close to the bus station and Sainsbury’s!

3. Wetherspoons

Of course, everyone loves a visit to Spoons – the drinks and food are both cheap and enjoyable. ‘The Sir Richard Owen’ Weatherspoon’s is located in the city centre near Marketgate shopping centre. I would highly recommend breakfasts at Wetherspoons too – they are just as cheap as a McDonalds, but give you so much more for your money! Weatherspoons sell just about any kind of food – from steaks to salads, soups to salted-caramel cake, all kinds of burgers to chicken wraps!

4. Bella Italia

This Italian is located in the centre of the city and you get almost half price meals with your purple card! From my knowledge, you are able to get discounts on your main pasta or pizza when you show your purple discount card, but not on all foods and the drinks. Although I do believe you can get 2 for 1 cocktails! My meal choice is always the duck and spring onion pasta dish which was £11.99, but reduced to £6.99 with my purple card. Also, the portions are decent sizes so it’s worth a visit!

5. Pizzeria Café Republic

My flatmates recently visited Pizzeria (it’s on campus near to Furness and Flyde) which costs £6.49 for an all-you-can-eat on a Saturday until 8pm that includes pizzas, salads and so on. Reasonably priced and handy for an on-campus meal with your friends; plus you can sit and study there all day and eat at the buffet!

6. Oscar’s Wine Bar and Bistro

This one is more on the pricey side, but again has decent sized portions with a lovely environment to enjoy your meal in! Oscar’s is situated within the centre of town, so is accessible and easy to find! Food choices include: fajitas, ribs, Cajun chicken, lasagne, chilli, all kinds of burgers, steaks, sandwiches, nachos and so on! My choice of food was the cheese burger which comes with either chunky chips or fries, lots of salad and a huge burger!

7. The Study Room

Although I have never been, my friends always recommend the Study Room. As far as I know they accept purple cards to give a discount as well. They sell burgers, hotdogs, cocktails and delicious puddings. The cocktails here are always 2 for £7.95 too!

There are plenty of places to fill you up whether you’re on your own, with your family or flatmates! Treat yourself!
