5 Ways To Eat Clean When You Dine Out: The Food Blog

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

Do you feel like it’s impossible to avoid the unhealthy options when you’re out for a meal? You’re wrong. These simple tips will have you enjoying the deliciously healthy options on any menu.

1. Do you want fries with that?

If you’re seeking healthy alternatives, look for anything which isn’t fried. Go for grilled or oven-roasted instead. There is less oil, therefore less fat! Frying any type food boosts the number of calories way up, so if you’re looking for something that won’t leave you feeling bloated and sluggish, avoid that type of cooking.

2. Extras & toppings, just 50p!

Steer away from the add-ons. Not only will this save you money, most of those extras are either unhealthy sauces, deep fried toppings or unnecessary “flavour boosts”. Enjoy the natural taste of what you’re eating without all those additional things on top. Your body and your taste buds will thank you.

3. Sharing is caring

No, it’s not just something we teach children, it’s advice for life. Feel like an appetiser before your main course? No point giving up on it, right? But, how about you just share it with someone else? This will prevent you from over eating and not feeling super full at the end of your meal. Also, portions at restaurants are often double the amount you would cook for yourself at home. By all means, treat yourself, but if it feels like too much, I’m sure your boyfriend won’t mind having some himself.

4. Less is more

The less stuff on your plate, the better. No, I don’t mean quantity-wise, I’m talking about ingredients. Avoid elaborate dishes with fancy sauces and creams. It’s much better to have something simple, where you can actually see all the ingredients on the plate, rather than unknown stuff piled on top of each other.

5. Choose fruit, not guilt

I know, sometimes it’s hard to say no to that mouth-watering chocolate soufflé or that fluffy meringue, but if you’ve already treated yourself during the week and know you shouldn’t be indulging anymore than you already have, scan the menu for fruit. With its sweet taste, you’re not ignoring your sweet tooth, but still not completely giving in to it. Pineapple is a good choice as it aids in burning fats in digestion, but then again any kind of fruit is better than that piece of Victoria sponge cake with ice cream on the side, am I right?
