Why YOU should join the Lafayette Ski and Board Team

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lafayette chapter.

Freshman year of college can be very overwhelming at times. Balancing higher-level classes, friend-making, and navigating your newly found independence is extremely demanding. Sometimes it can be difficult to find ways to destress. I found that one of the most fun ways for me to destress was to get involved in things that I was passionate about. For me, those things were getting involved in Her Campus and The Lafayette Ski and Snowboard club. While I could go on and on about how much I love Her Campus and the amazing people I have met through this chapter, my purpose here is to encourage you to join the ski team.

Growing up, skiing was always a large part of my identity. Joining the ski team at Lafayette was a no brainer for me. Before joining I was not sure what to expect, but I can confidently say that I was not disappointed. The club ski and board team is composed of skiers and boarders who have the opportunity to compete in alpine and freestyle events. We compete at 5 regular-season races, all located within the Atlantic Highlands Region. We also have the opportunity to compete at regionals and nationals, which are events that we qualify for almost every year.

What I love most about the ski team is that there are people of all different skill levels. Some members have only skied a few times or not at all, and members who have been hitting the slopes since they were two years old. It’s really great to be a part of this small outdoor community. Although it may have been our love for skiing and boarding that brought many of us together, I believe that what truly bonds the team is the welcoming atmosphere and genuine enjoyment for spending time with each other. It is for this reason that we try to get together off the slopes as often as possible.

That being said, what I believe to be the highlight of the season, the ultimate bonding experience, takes place at the very beginning of the season. During the final week of our winter break, we take a five day long trip to Jay Peak in Vermont where we spend the days shredding the slopes and the nights eating a family dinner, playing games, and getting to know each other. It is a supreme kick-off to the season.

If you’re not already convinced to join, follow us on Instagram @lafskiandboard. If you’re looking for a family, take a chance on the ski team, you won’t regret it. Cur non.
