Since 2009, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber have been dating on and off. When the couple split in 2014, fans were devastated. Fans were relieved when the two got back together in the fall of 2017, stronger than ever. After a few short months back together, the two split for good in March of 2018, only for Justin Bieber to start dating Hailey Baldwin two months later.

This past month, Selena Gomez released two new singles titled “Lose You To Love Me” and  “Look At Me Now”. Justin has his fair share of breakup songs, including “Love Yourself” and “Purpose”, both of which are believed to be written about Selena Gomez, so it was no surprise that these two songs were about Jelena.

Selena dropped her first passionate breakup ballad in late October. There are several subtle hints that this song was written about Justin. She skillfully name-drops his most recent album “Purpose” with one lyric that says “set fire to my purpose”. She then drops the line “we’d always go into it blindly” suggesting that this relationship was something that had rekindled more than once, referring to their on-again/off-again relationship, further implying it is about Justin. This key lyric is when she sings, “in two months you replaced us”, clearly referencing the fact that Justin began dating Hailey Balwin two months after they broke up.

“Look At Her Now” isn’t a direct dig at Justin Bieber; it is more about her recovery after the relationship and her journey since then. This song is an affirmation that she is currently living her best life.

In an interview with Ryan Secrest, she reveals a few finalizing details about the songs. She reveals that she wrote the songs over a year ago and that it was too hard to release them then. If you take a look back at her timeline, a year ago would have been right around Hailey and Justin began to get serious. Since her relationship with Justin is the only one that falls within that time frame, it is clear that these songs are about their relationship. She concludes the interview by explaining that although the songs were hard to write and to listen to at the time, she now sees them as more beautiful and creative than melancholy. Selena discloses that these two songs were a nice way of wrapping up a chapter in her life and that the best parts of the album are yet to come.

What an iconic way to draw publicity before her next album release!
