Easy and Cheap Ways to Switch Up Your Coffee This Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lafayette chapter.

One of my favorite things about fall is the seasonal food and drinks, especially coffee. As the holiday season approaches and the weather gets cooler, there is nothing more comforting than getting cozy with a nice warm latte before your Zoom classes. Though I am usually a black coffee drinker, the fall flavors are so good that I can’t help but crave pumpkin spice. However, going out to get these seasonal drinks at Starbucks or Dunkin can get expensive. Instead of spending so much money on coffee every day, I came up with a couple of ways to make your fall coffee just as good from home.

Pumpkin Spice Creamer

A store-bought pumpkin spice flavored creamer is a great alternative for the Starbucks Pumpkin Cream. Most popular brands like Coffee-Mate and International Delight have awesome pumpkin flavors. If you’re looking for a healthier dairy-free option, I have been loving the pumpkin spice creamer from the brand Nutpods!

Add Some Spice

One of the easiest ways to get a burst of flavor in your coffee is to simply open up your spice cabinet and grab some cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin pie spice. I especially love doing this because it gives a great flavor without adding any sweetness to your coffee. My only word of caution is to not use too much spice. A little goes a long way and you really only need a pinch.

Change your Sweetener

Switching from regular white sugar to different sweeteners with more flavor can have a huge impact on your coffee. One alternative I recommend is brown sugar. You can get the same amount of sweetness in your coffee as you would with white sugar, but you also get a rich molasses flavor that is perfect for the fall. Another alternative, and perhaps my favorite, is pure maple syrup. It gives a ton of flavor and the perfect amount of sweetness. Maple syrup is also much more natural and less processed than typical white sugar.

Pre-Flavored Coffee

Though it may seem like an obvious option, buying pre-flavored coffee is a super easy option that works for any type of budget. So many brands have great fall-flavored coffee grounds and k-cups. You can get great results and it takes the same amount of time as making your usual coffee. If you want to try a lot of different flavors, Amazon has some great variety packs of fall-flavored k-cups.

It is so easy to make fall coffee drinks at home and also a great way to save money. As much as I love a good Starbucks PSL, they are expensive and I don’t always have time to drive to Starbucks and back between my Zoom classes. Using some of these fall alternatives to my usual coffee routine saves a lot of time and works great on a budget. I hope that you enjoy these tips and tricks as much as I do!
