Winter break approaches and so does the age-old question: what should I do?! After months of classes, homework, group projects, clubs, and activities, it can sometimes be daunting to have so much free time. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to pass the time over break!

Relax

One of the first things I do once I get home (besides take a nap!) is shower without shower shoes in my own bathroom! Alternatively, taking a bubble bath is one of the most relaxing things you can do. Apply a hair mask, face mask, body butter, whatever. Just treat yourself and remember that finals are over!

Spend Time with Family

Being at home is an amazing time to spend quality time with family and friends from high school who you might not see as much. Have a holiday get together or just watch a movie, and remember to tell your mom how much you miss her!

Go Ice-Skating

A wintertime staple! I live close to NYC so I love to visit Bryant Park. Wherever you go, bundle up and take friends with you! Of course, many ice hockey rinks also offer free skate time. Look them up and take some freinds! Whether you’re a first-time skater or a pro, this is always a wintertime treat and and perfect for photos to complete your wintery Instagram aesthetic.

Bake Cookies

You’re home and you have a nice, clean kitchen and plenty of ingredients to work with. The only option is to bake! Baking relieves stress, so put on an apron and get cooking! For added fun, watch The Great British Baking Show on Netflix to get you in the baking mood!

Find a New Show to Binge

With your new free time, you can binge a show (or several)! The website TasteDive is amazing at helping you figure out what to binge. You just search what shows you already like, then it suggests other shows to watch.

Get a Job

Getting a job might not be what you think of when you go home for break, but it is a great way to earn some money! Lots of stores look for seasonal help during the holidays, which is perfect for college students who aren’t looking for something full time yet. Check out local businesses or look up seasonal jobs online!

Apply for Scholarships

When you’re home, feel free to use your extra free time to do some research and edit scholarship applications. Look for scholarships offered by your school, free scholarships online, or if any of the organizations or groups you’re affiliated with offer any.

With all of your free time and the whole world at your fingertips, spend your winter break however you want it! Winter break is a time to get out of the academic mindset that you’ve been stuck in. It is about refreshing yourself and your mind so you’re ready to go again for spring semester. Make the most of your free time and have fun!
