Identity Crisis: A Halloween Story

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at La Verne chapter.

As a child, I’ve never gone trick-or-treating, but I definitely dressed up in costume every year. This past Halloween I had 3 different looks, each with its own backstory.

One week before Halloween, the Theatre Department at ULV put on their first ever Haunted House. I joined the cast of characters, and I played a cute little girl whose mouth got sewn shut. Lovely, aren’t I?

Jordan Nelson is an amazing special effects makeup artist, and she put liquid latex over my mouth and covered my face with makeup. It was extremely difficult to keep my mouth shut for over two hours, and it definitely left an unpleasant feeling when I took it off. Everything was worth it though, because I managed to scare the pants off of so many people. I would definitely volunteer to take part in the haunted house again next year.

On the actual day of Halloween, I originally planned to be a Ravenclaw student. I didn’t want to be mistaken for an Asian schoolgirl however, so I changed my mind and dressed as Merida from Brave. Doing my hair took TWO HOURS, but it was worth it because I got my stick straight hair to be as curly and wild as Merida’s. Sadly, I didn’t have orange hair spray to finish the look, but I have the horse to make up for it.

Later on in the night, I pulled out my Harry Potter Snuggie and curled up on the couch. I was writing my essay, desperately trying to finish it so I could go trick-or-treating (which never happened because I’m such a great procrastinator). One of my floor mates told me that I looked like Hermione Granger, especially with the hair. I got inspired and decided to wear my Snuggie out to dinner, getting a lot of attention from the Harry Potter fans on campus.

This Halloween was one of the weirdest experiences I ever had: dressing up as three different characters and spending the night finishing a paper that was due the next day. I didn’t get free candy though, so maybe I’ll hit up Target for the discounts.

Much like the Disney character, I don't let society define who I am & I always do what I think is right. Communications/Public Relations major, Class of 2019 at the University of La Verne. I aspire to learn from the best to better serve the world we live in by creating clear messages for the public.
