The Hanawalt Squirrel in action

It’s Thursday morning and you are walking to class. Latte and laptop in hand, the week is almost through and you are daydreaming about Friday night plans. Out of nowhere, you feel them—the pair of beady black eyes that aren’t just looking at you, but looking into your soul. They belong to the Hanawalt Squirrel, perched proudly upon the green Hanawalt House sign waiting to strike against students walking to class. We took a moment to personify this campus celebrity so that his motives and actions can be a little clearer to members of the ULV community.

Her Campus: Why do you frighten people walking to class?

Hanawalt Squirrel: It’s not so much that I enjoy seeing people 10 times my size run away from me in fear as much as it is that I love jumping on people’s backpack’s and taking a little ride. My tactics are all about the surprise factor.

HC: What is your favorite part about La Verne?

HS: Definitely scurrying around seeing students stop in plain terror when they see me coming their way.

HC: How does that make you feel?

HS: Well, I used to get offended. It is not my fault I have at rest crazy face. I have learned that it is better to channel those feelings into my surprise attacks. I’ve embraced my at rest crazy face.

HC: If you could have a conversation with any human that has walked the streets of La Verne, who would it be?

HS: Definitely this Hanawalt character. I want him to know I’m doing a great job protecting his house.

The Hanawalt Squirrel can be found outside the Hanawalt House, but only when you least expect him. Drop by for a visit, if you dare.
