This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at La Verne chapter.

Fictionally, she goes by many names; the most well known being “Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of Dragons” (Game of Thrones), “Louisa Clark” (Me Before You), and most recently and hopefully excitingly for all you Star Wars fans, “Qi’ra” (Solo: A Star Wars Story). Emilia Clarke is an English actress, who portrays all of our favorite strong-lead fictional females! Emilia has taken on such a variety of roles and has completely smashed all of them out of the park, exceeding any and all expectations. For these reasons, Emilia Clarke is quickly catching the eye of the public, becoming Hollywood’s new “it” girl because of her strong ad fierce acting capabilities, as well as her quirky, down-to-earth real life persona.

From the moment I first saw Emilia on the screen, I knew she was going to become such an idol for females and a force to be reckoned with. She has succeeded on driving every female stereotype and expectation down, crushing them, and rising up to portray genuine women empowerment through her characters, most specifically as Daenerys and Qi’ra. At first glance, these roles can be seen as weak women who need protection, but as the story-line continues, the audience soon learns that she never needed anyone, that she can obtain power, rule, and be just as strong as any man can, but better.

Emilia Clarke has been an inspiration for women on and off the screen. Two social movements that Emilia is completely passionate about are the “Me Too” and “Times Up” movements, which have gladly lit a fire of change for our entertainment industry and society as a whole. Emilia highlighted the importance of standing up and contributing to such meaningful movements such as these two through social media, mostly her instagram (@emilia_clarke). She participated in the metaphor aspects of the movement by wearing black during the award shows, to show the public that these women and men who have been harassed, do not stand alone and shall no longer feel ashamed or silenced by their stories.

Overall, I love Emilia Clarke and the unique flare she brings to the screen, entertainment industry, and Hollywood as a whole. She is a pleasure to watch in anything; especially where she is representing a strength and individualistic motive for all women through her characters, during interviews where she has a chance to reveal her true, hilarious self, and on the red carpet. Emilia is an actress who truly cares about her fans and does not want to ever disappoint them, which is surprisingly more than I can say about other role-models in entertainment.  We can continue to support Emilia and cherish her breathtaking (and might I add, life-changing) skills on set, as well as her personable qualities, which make her feel like an actual friend who you know, by watching the films and shows that she is in. Most recently, which by the way is super entertaining and down-right awesome (I swear I’m not just saying this because I love all the Star Wars sagas) movie that is out in theaters now: Solo, A Star Wars Story! Emilia’s performance in this film was absolutely flaw-less, just as she tends to be, but I refuse to spoil anything, so just take my word for it when I say that you will not regret being introduced to her character- basically, you do not want to miss out on this movie!

La Verne '20

I am a junior English major, Educational Studies minor at the University of La Verne. I'm a girl who loves to write about things she's passionate about. I have hope that someday this world will be just, equal, and filled with love. My dream is to have a great impact in the lives of those around me, but until then I'm trying to learn and be open to as much as possible. Oh, and I love Disney.
