Balancing School, Extracurricular Activities, and Two Jobs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at La Verne chapter.

As occupied hard-working college students, the balancing act between a social life and college degree can be strenuous to maintain. An interview of Deborah Lee, a Business Administration major withholding various extracirricular activities while working two jobs demonstrates how college women can complete the unobtainable.

Having known Deborah as a fraternity brother of the newly established business fraternity on campus, Delta Sigma Pi, and as a friend, Deborah Lee emits the qualities of a dilligent and personable member in the community on campus. Being involved within the Campus Activity Board as the Philanthropy Chair and as a active member in Delta Sigma Pi, Deborah identifies with her willingness to help and generosity toward her peers. Working on-campus and off-campus, as a Student Lead in Davenport and as a Telecommuniations Intern at Voice Marketing, Deborah strives for excellence with her abilities to maintain her hectic schedule throughout the week. With the desire to promote the welfare of others, Deborah is always of great help and great ideas.

Interview:

What does your average day consist of?

“I wake up at 6:30 AM, leave for school at 7 AM, 8 AM begins my day at school.”

Deborah describes herself as a early bird, having planned her classes in the morning and leaving room for community hours from 11 AM – 1 PM everyday – all in plan for her work schedule in the afternoon while leaving room for more extracirriculars at night.

How does commuting affect your daily routine?

“Waking up earlier,” Deborah immediately responds.

“I have to take into consideration being a lot better with time management, considering if there is enough time with traffic, finding a parking space and geting to and from my car.”

What do you keep in your car?

“I technically just live in my car. I keep all my books fro school, a blanket, a light jacket, work clothes, paper maps, napkins, sunglasses, hair comb, hair ties, glasses, contact solution, lotions, mints, car freshener, water, electric air pump for tires, jumper cables…etc.”

What do you prioritize?

“Internally, I really don’t know because my life is a mess,” Deborah chuckles.

Like many other collegiates, Deborah struggles managing her daily routine. She wants to find a balance between family and friends, family time reserved for weeeknds and friends during the school day.

How did you find your balance with school, work and extracurriculars?

“Being busy is easy but it is my free time that is the killer. I have so many things to do while having nothing to do at the same time.”

What are some of your hobbies?

“I started this in the summer as a part of me wanted to share my work with people.”  Deborah has a instagram dedicated to her poetry where she shares her rhythimic qualities of language and her composition of thoughts and feelings.
