Thanks to the brave and kick-ass women before us, talking about menstrual cycles is now pretty common in our society today. We no longer whisper it to one another or keep it as a taboo secret that only women should know about. Nowadays you see articles about it everywhere. Even art exhibitions have been dedicated to menstrual cycles!

Although many of these outlets have been subjected to criticism, the point still remains: Our periods are no longer a scary secret.

I know that you may be thinking that this is just another article talking about how much we can talk about our periods, but that is only slightly the truth. I actually want to take a moment to filter through some of the greatest and most horrifying moments that most women have endured in relation to their periods. Lets have a look at what makes a period so terrible and sometimes kind of great.

1). It is incredibly common to have insatiable hunger when on, or close to, your time of the month. It’s totally okay! It’s also kind of nice to be able to use it as justification for buying four family-sized bags of Tostitos. (speaking from experience)

2). What comes in, must expand. Bloating is a total bummer especially in bikini weather but you know what? NO ONE is immune to puffing up a bit after eating in a two-piece so just own it.

3). Sometimes we leak and it has happened to everyone. I have never heard of a girl with a SPOTLESS record.  That being said, if you see a girl in need help her out! Let her know and pass her a tampon.

4). CRAMPS. Enough said.

5). Sometimes swimming just isn’t in the books because it’s a little heavy, but that’s fine! At least tag along for some sun.

Okay so obviously all of those are horrible but like I’ve said, they happen to everyone and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It may seem as though there isn’t a single upside to having your period sometimes but luckily for you, I have TWO!

1). Not in the mood for things to get steamy with your significant other? BOOM.

6). And the most Golden Grace of them all…

We are women, and we bleed. It’s essential and it’s unifying. Help one another out when you see a fellow bleeder. Hand her some Advil, a pad if she needs it and remember; men know about it now. So shout it from the rooftops! Throw your tampons in the air (or maybe not because they’re expensive)! And may you never have to take your book bag to the bathroom in the middle of class again!
