What is it Going to Take

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

Recent events have many of us questioning how many more people have to die so senselessly before action is taken. Especially in the case of the shooting at the church in Texas as it could have been prevented. Many people are wondering what it is going to take for the discussion about gun control to be taken seriously. So far, nightclubs, schools, movie theaters and now churches are places in which people have to worry that their lives are at stake. Nowhere is safe anymore.

People should not have to worry about potentially dying because they are going to a heavily populated event. It should not be the norm for a shooting to occur at such an event. Making guns less accessible is the obvious solution. Why so many are against such a resolution is confounding as it is not at the expense of their right to bare arms. Guns could still be legal but harder to obtain. Potential gun owners need more invasive background checks. People who do possess a gun should have regulations they must follow, and it is up to the government to ensure they follow through.

If everyone were to carry a gun for “protection,” in the instance of a mass shooting only more shots will be fired which is likely to cause more destruction. The point is to ensure that guns are kept out of the hands of potential criminals.

Only when the shooter is not white are they referred to as a terrorist. No one wants to talk about domestic terrorists even thought they are responsible for the majority of mass shootings in the United States. When the terrorist attack in New York occurred the week before, Trump referred back to what happened in Vegas and said the reasoning as to why he did not speak out about it immediately was because he was told not politicize a tragedy. But after what happened in New York, Trump said he could not hold back. The real difference was the gunman in New York was not white.

This past shooting has not received nearly enough news coverage. And only a week later, America is already starting to move on. How many more tragedies should have to occur before we start talking about domestic terrorists and their access to guns?
