Skip the Plastic, Save the Planet!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

In today’s world, it comes as no shock that we’re all trying to save the planet. As a college student, it’s hard to think that even though we’re on a tight budget we can help the planet too. Even with small changes in our daily routine, we can help reduce our carbon footprint and help ourselves in the process.

It also comes as no surprise that a large sum of the waste on our planet comes from plastics produced by beauty industries! One small change in your beauty routine can make even the biggest difference. That change can be as small as throwing out your plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles and switching to solid shampoo and conditioner bars!

Shampoo and conditioner bars are hair cleansers that are solidified and simplified! According to an article from Unwrapped Life, over 525 million shampoo and conditioner bottles are ending up in landfills each year. Just switching to solid hair cleansers can drastically make a difference in those numbers! Not only are solid cleansers good for reducing your carbon footprint, but it’s a healthier option for your hair as well. Most places that sell shampoo and conditioner bars, such as LUSH or Love Beauty and Planet, use non-cruelty methods when producing and are also paraben- and sulfate-free. This is especially important!

Most solid hair cleansers take about 2-3 washes for your hair and scalp to get used to. Due to the bars being so raw and naturally made, during the first wash, they usually strip your hair of the sulfates and parabens used by other hair companies. This will result in your hair feeling slightly textured, but I strongly recommend you give them a chance at first! Solid shampoo and conditioner bars will restore the natural order to your scalp, bring back natural oils, and retain moisture, which is what a healthy head needs!

In my personal experience with switching to solid hair cleansers, I can admit that I was very skeptical because they gave my hair an odd texture. Despite that, I stuck with it and gave them a chance! After a few washes, my hair felt amazing and I did too! Knowing I was helping reduce my plastic waste is such a good feeling! I am a huge tree hugger and I will do anything to help reduce the waste that we produce and you should too! Do yourself and our struggling planet a favor and make the small switch. You won’t regret it!
