This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

Being an English major, I have dealt with writer’s block many, many, many times. It’s extremely frustrating to handle, let alone overcome. Here are some prompts to inspire your next poem. These prompts could spark ideas for stories as well!

  1. Write a poem about how your favorite color tastes, smells, or feels.
  2. Listen to your current favorite song or a song that has recently been on repeat for you. Write a poem inspired by the topic of the song or rewrite the song from an alternate perspective (ex. If the song is about being heartbroken, rewrite the song from the perspective of the heartbreaker).
  3. Write an ekphrastic poem based on Renaissance art.
  4. Write a seasonal poem about flowers (or other aspects of seasonal nature).
  5. Write a poem about coffee.
  6. Write a poem about your elementary school. What does it look like? Smell like? Use concrete images.
  7. Try to write a poem about an emotion or situation you haven’t experienced before. Love? A breakup? Loss? What do you think those things feel like?

If none of these inspire you, this article should also help. I have used many of these prompts and have found a ton of inspiration.
