“Dear Tyler…” A Letter for Change

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

Dear Tyler,

You’ve never quite written yourself a letter before.  It certainly wasn’t for a lack of trying, the desire didn’t exist.  Then again, letters weren’t your style.  Poetry and lyrics: that’s your medium.  Why not approach this with a song?  I know it’s frightening to approach.  Maybe even controversial, but you can’t keep ignoring this.  Even as a flicker of insight as it meandered through your mind, is the thought of what could happen really holding you back?

I mean, I get it.  It’s a TOTAL game-changer.  Your entire existence becomes altered.  What then?  I’ll tell you what: nothing at all detrimental.  Time will continue onward and the world keeps turning.  More importantly, you will be better because of it.  Your questions will ease and you will be one step closer to peace.  But what if they judge you?  What if people view you differently?  Valid questions, I must admit.  I need you to listen to me though.

Is it going to shock a lot of people?  Yes.  May it offend some others?  Of course it will, but why must you suffer at the hands of their comfort?  You always cared about how other people saw you.  You were never handsome enough for yourself and hid your face with your hair for so long.  Why does it matter how they see you?  It’s time to view yourself with the clarity that your loved ones always have.  Being true to your soul, that is what will keep them by your side.  Your identity is nothing compared to your character.

Honestly this is incredibly brave of you.  In asking this question, you are opening doors to possibilities hardly approached: why is it that you get along with girls so much easier than your male friends?  Why were you always so uncomfortable in your own skin?  Why do you feel the need to hide your appearance away?  This new and important idea is bringing everything to the surface.  Ask the question…it will only help you to further understand yourself and the depth of your character.  I believe in you and love you.  Very much so…

Take the most care of yourself,

Tyler
