This week President Trump made the first decision of his presidency that I am actually happy with. For those who are unsure what I am referring to, Mr. Trump just put a halt on the trophy ban that was recently lifted.
This ban was originally put in place by the Obama administration to stop American’s from hunting big game in other countries and brining home “trophies,” aka pieces of dead elephant carcass and elephant tusks to showcase their “winnings”.
On the 18th of November the Republicans lifted this ban to allow Zimbabwe and Zambia to permit big game hunting of elephants and “put much needed revenue back into conservation”. Since this plan is completely fucked and I am baffled at how anyone could ever think hunting elephants and bringing home their mangled body parts would help conservation efforts in any form. I was relieved that Trump actually showed the world he does in fact have a shred of moral decency.
But unfortunately, my intellectual friends, we cannot just be happy about this and move on. Because we understand the patterns in which our president repeatedly operates we must ask ourselves “why is Trump doing this?”
The answer, like many other decisions our nation’s leader, is simple. Mr. Trump likes elephants and he was unaware that his administration had made the decision to lift the ban until he learned it from the news. Furthermore, he was angered that he was being criticized for a decision he had no part in making, or knowledge that it was even being made.
This is problematic for numerous reasons, but let’s begin with the most obvious. WHY IS OUR PRESIDENT LEARNING ABOUT DECISIONS HIS ADMINISTRATION IS MAKING FROM NEWS MEDIA? How can you even be expected to make decisions for our country when you are completely unaware of the ones happening right in front of your own eyes. Thank goodness for the Internet or else he would still be completely unaware.
But the real reason he stopped this ban from being lifted boils down to “he likes elephants.” I am so happy that our policy is being created off of Mr. Trump’s personal likes and dislikes. Forget about the facts of endangered species or extinction rates, he simply just likes elephants.
What a relief that we can all rest easy knowing that President Trump’s policies are created based on emotion.
