5 Ways to Conquer The Loneliness of a Virtual College Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

Beginning college can be a scary time for many. In an unfamiliar place surrounded by new people, it is easy to be overwhelmed. In addition to this, the world is being panic-stricken by the global COVID-19 pandemic, making this semester a strenuous one. There are many new restrictions put in place in order to obey social distancing guidelines, making it difficult for many clubs to meet and classes to operate under their normal circumstances. It can be easy to feel trapped by such abnormality and endure seclusion from the rest of the world. Even through this all, there are many ways to make college during a global pandemic enjoyable and not so lonely.

Get Involved in Clubs Virtually

With so many restrictions, many schools are offering the opportunity for clubs to meet virtually. Whether through Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime, these gatherings can be a great way to connect with students on campus as well as those who chose to stay off-campus.

Do things that bring you comfort

A great way to conquer loneliness is to do things that bring you comfort and happiness. Whether reading a book, watching a movie, or playing a video game, indulging in activities that bring you joy will help ease the remoteness of college during a global pandemic.

Reach out to others from your school through social media

When you are feeling this way, know you are not alone. There are many other students out there who feel just as secluded from the world! Talking to others who understand what you are going through is a great way to alleviate isolation and maybe even form a new bond.

Meet with friends outdoors

There are socially distant ways to meet with your friends outdoors and stay safe! Whether kicking a soccer ball or having a picnic (6 feet apart), there are ways to get creative and see friends. Don’t forget your mask, though!

Maintain a schedule

To find a sense of normalcy, maintaining a schedule is an important element. In a normal year, students would have the luxury of going to classes and doing college activities in person, but this year is different. Maintaining a schedule will help you continue a sense of normalcy and keep you from falling into a slump from lack of structure.

Though going to college during a pandemic is tough, we must all do our part to remain socially distant. There are ways to get creative with how to fulfill our social interaction in a new place, but we must remember that one day, we will be able to meet face to face again. Times do not feel normal, but there are ways to make them feel better.
