Everyone loves a good throwback song, and everyone loves fall! A lot of songs in my fall playlist are throwbacks. Perhaps it’s because they’re timeless or maybe they just give off those mysterious fall vibes. Either way, they always put me in a calm and cozy mood.

“Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac is iconic for making calm and catchy ballads. It has also been said that Stevie Nicks, the lead singer, is a witch. It is said that this song, “Rhiannon,” is about her being a witch. The song is about a mysterious girl named Rhiannon that is viewed as untouchable to those around her. The song has a catchy melody that is upbeat enough to not be considered a “sad” song, but it still has an underlying mysterious theme.

Ophelia by The Lumineers

Okay, I know this isn’t necessarily a real throwback since the song came out in 2016, but I think it still counts! “Ophelia” is also about a girl. In this case, the girl is the love interest from the lead singer’s point of view. The song is very light-hearted and sweet, which is why it is loved by so many.

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman

This song is a classic! It tells the story of a girl who lives a life that she is unhappy with. She meets a man who has the potential to help make her life meaningful, however, he does not meet those standards and disappoints her. She lives her life unsatisfied until she finally kicks him out to pursue her original idea of living a meaningful life—this time without him. This song is an oldie but a goodie because even for the late ’80s, the theme of the song explores independence and not expecting your significant other to make your life meaningful. The melody is extremely light and calm, making it the perfect song to read a book or do homework to.

Billie Jean Cover by The Civil Wars

This is another one that I’m not sure counts as a traditional throwback since it’s a cover. We all know Michael Jackson’s original song “Billie Jean,” which is amazing as is, but this cover by The Civil Wars screams autumn. The cover has a blues and jazz kind of tone. The harmonies of the two vocalists are also perfect and add such a nice sound to the already great instrumental. This cover does the original song a surprising amount of justice. A lot of people are skeptical in regards to covers because they think it ruins the original, which is understandable. However, I promise, this one is worth a listen.

Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You by Stevie Nicks

This is the only song on here that has a 100% somber sound. This song genuinely reminds me of a cold and rainy fall day where you just feel sad. The song is in a second-person point of view, where Stevie Nicks is asking the person she is talking to if anyone cares about them. She is implying that although it may seem like nobody cares, she does, and she strives to make that known. She wants this person to change for the better because their attitude is making them lifeless. This song is incredible sounding and the message is amazing.
