WEBTOON has quickly become the main platform for web comics, jam-packed with beautifully illustrated stories. Authors produce episodes, the equivalent of book chapters, that are released for free on designated days of the week. Readers are then able to purchase coins in order to unlock previews of unreleased episodes. With thousands of available stories spread across 23 genres, it’s easy to become overwhelmed while trying to locate quality content. Here are five series to add to your TBR list:
1. Purple HyacinthÂ
Dynamic duo Ephemerys and Sophism have crafted a vast world of crime, intrigue, and romance. The story begins from the perspective of Lauren Sinclair, a police officer with the ability to sense when people are lying, who must forge an alliance with “The Purple Hyacinth,” a formidable assassin. As the story continues, the pair realize that the city’s criminal underground is far more complex than they’d thought. The series boasts a massive cast, and yet all of the characters are highlighted in their own well-written arcs. There’s a pleasant balance of action and drama, leaving readers on the edge of their seats for each Tuesday release. Purple Hyacinth is currently on its third season, with 158 available free episodes, 1.7 million subscribers, and a 9.9 out of 10 based on reader reviews.
2. NevermoreÂ
Authors Kit Trace and Kate Flynn take Edgar Allen Poe’s famous works and turn them on their heads in this twisting tale. Protagonists Lenore and Annabel Lee find themselves at Nevermore Academy, a school for the dead that offers a second chance at life. The girls must navigate treacherous lessons and backstabbing classmates as they attempt to remember the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Fans of Poe will love all of the series’ allusions to his work; however, the references are subtle enough that readers can enjoy Nevermore as the original masterpiece that it is. With 49 current episodes, 437,000 subscribers, and a 9.8 rating, these Friday uploads will leave you breathless.
3. Of Swamp & SeaÂ
Mia Jay Boulton and Laurel Boulton have designed a world of magic and mayhem that grows with each new episode. When a job goes wrong, monster hunter Jonah must help Mercy, a woman whose spirit has become intertwined with that of a wolf. As the two search for a cure, Mercy comes to realize that she may be more attached to Jonah, and to the wolf inside her, than she had originally thought. With 55 episodes, 215,000 followers, and a 9.8 rating, this story definitely deserves more attention when it updates on Wednesdays.
4. Raven SagaÂ
Chihiro Howe takes classic fairy tales and merges them with her own unique style in this magical saga. Wen is a girl who has lived in an isolated cabin all of her life, with only her grandmother for company. But when the arrival of a mysterious boy changes everything, Wen must journey to find the magic within herself. All of the protagonists have a sweet positive attitude that serves as a breath of fresh air in a sea of content that prefers the dark and dismal. With 79 episodes, 246,000 subscribers, and a 9.8 rating, these Friday uploads will leave you anxious for next week’s arrival.
5. Not Even BonesÂ
An adaptation of the novel by Rebecca Schaeffer, Not Even Bones is for those who don’t back down at the grim and gory. Nita helps her mother sell monster body parts on the black market, dissecting them with little remorse. That is, until one of their subjects escapes and Nita finds herself on the run. While the artists have changed with each season, the story continues to be captivating, exploring the depths of morality, forgiveness, and redemption. With 133 episodes, 1.8 million followers, and a 9.7 rating, this series will have you even more eager for Saturday to arrive.
