4 Relaxing and Safe Ways to Hang Out With Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

So, the world is going up in flames, and part of this is because of the spike in COVID cases nationwide. While we’re all exhausted from quarantine, and everyone wants it to be over, it’s not. We certainly can’t pretend that it is. Instead of yelling about it, I’m going to suggest some fun activities to do with people following safety guidelines. Please enjoy!

A Book Club

This is a good activity to do at any time. However,  when you can’t really meet in person, or when you do, there has to be a distance between you, talking about books is a good way to spend time with your friends. My book club is conquering Harry Potter because one of us hadn’t read it. While we’re all away in different places, we meet once a week on Zoom to catch up about life, and about the chapters we read. It’s a great way to socialize with people without needing to be in person, or at least stay out of each other’s space.

A Movie Advent Calendar

Okay, I am a crafter, so getting to make an advent calendar is a fun idea for me. Basically, you open a flap and there’s the movie you’re going to watch that night! I do this once a week with one of my friends. We picked 52 movies and made it so we pick a number each week, and open a door to find the name of the movie. While I kind of wish there was chocolate in them like the usual Christmas ones, a fun activity is pretty cool too. This is similar to the scratch off movie charts that were all over Tik Tok this past year. You could probably find an advent calendar made for you, especially now that it’s Christmas Time.

Virtual Cooking Sessions

My friends and I always cooked and baked together before the pandemic, so our activity shortlist took a big hit when trying to figure out what to do. We decided that a pandemic shouldn’t stop our baking habits, and if cooking classes can be held online, so can our baking sessions. We’ll all log on to Zoom or Facetime and bake/cook the same item. It can get wild sometimes, but it’s a fun way to catch up and participate in an activity. Plus, we usually end up with something very delicious.

TV Binge with Friends

This is an activity that I do alone as well, but as someone who watched a lot of TV, getting other people to watch the shows I like has kind of been a quarantine pastime of mine. My one friend and I are watching Teen Wolf together. One or two times a week we meet up on Amazon Watch Party—yes, that’s a thing—and watch Dylan O’Brien and Tyler Hoechlin be amazing. Similar to Netflix Party, it allows you to watch movies with friends with a texting fixture. I love watching her reactions to a show I’ve already seen, and it’s a relaxing activity to do during the week!

The world we’re living in is very wild, and very stressful, but it’s important that we keep ourselves and others as safe as we can! Consider trying some of these ideas, and think of your own creative ideas to keep safe and have fun.
