Things For Halloween You Probably Were at One Point: We All Had the Same Childhood

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

I’m convinced we all grew up the same way. The more posts I see on Twitter and videos I watch on TikTok support my theory because it’s almost like every single one I can relate with. So, I was thinking about my Halloween costume for this year, trying to come up with something good, and started to reminisce about my childhood costumes from the past. All this reminiscing had only made me realize how straight up CLICHÉ they all were because I don’t think I’ve seen a year that a kid hasn’t been these things. You know when you see a cute kid costume that’s actually creative? That was never me, except– one year I was a “señorita girl,” and while that’s not creative it’s at least different. A little weird, I know, but still, different. So, with no further adieu, here are previous costumes I had for Halloween that you also probably wore at one point.

  •       Pumpkin

Even today’s babies fall into the category of being forced into an oversized, orange bag-like fabric with a green hat resembling a stem, with matching brown shoes. This costume can be seen on infants and toddlers too because it’s just so easy and basic. Everyone knows what it is and it’s pretty much the resemblance of the “basic, entry-level” Halloween costume.

  • Princess

I’m not kidding even a little bit when I say I was seriously EVERY princess. From Cinderella to Ariel to Snow White to Jasmine to Belle– you get it. I don’t know how I was given enough years of my childhood to be every princess, but I was. I’m pretty sure I was Alice in Wonderland one year too, and that was because I ran out of princesses to be and considered her the next best thing. I was a Disney kid for sure so the signs of my obsession was definitely not limited to Halloween costumes. I especially loved the year I was Sleeping Beauty and my brother was some glow in the dark skeleton looking thing– a perfect side piece for my princess image. (We LOVE cute costume ideas for couples!)

  • Cheerleader

The pigtails. The pom poms. The Varsity letter font. You guessed it, I’m unmistakably a cheerleader. Another cliché that I strutted as a 10 year old.

  • Pirate

I guess I decided I was done with the princess phase and did a complete 180 this year. I remember having an eye patch that I definitely lost by the end of the night, and also a hook for a hand that ended up in the bottom of my candy bag before I got to the second house after realizing my ability to ring the doorbell was being altered. Anything jeopardizing the candy supply = a solid no. I think I was comfortable though, compared to the princess dress from the year before that itched in me in all the wrong places because of some glittery tuul the costume was made of or something.

  • Witch

I honestly think this one was my favorite. I was a witch twice actually. One was a plain black dress with dark purple accents and a hat that I was SO embarrassed to wear. I seriously was so nervous to go out with that thing, and my mom was so annoyed that I was such a brat about it she almost didn’t let me go trick or treating that year, haha yikes. The next ‘witch’ Halloween was followed by me completely spray-coloring my hair orange and wearing knee high orange and black striped socks with a tutu to compliment. So yeah, I guess I got out of my embarrassment phase.

I’m sure there are plenty of other costumes that you had I didn’t name here, but in my defense, princesses took up most of my trick-or-treating years. On the other hand, I guarantee those that read about my most basic Halloween costumes could definitely identify similar looks when it comes to their past Halloweens. So much has changed since the years we spent the night knocking on doors for candy, but one thing shouldn’t and that is BEING SAFE AND STAYING WITH YOUR FRIENDS/USING THE BUDDY SYSTEM!! Be safe this Halloween and have fun!!
