Talking Style with Chic Collegiette, Sophie Milstein

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

KU freshman Sophie Milstein (@sophandsuch) is known for a lot of things, such as her impeccable taste in music, her unique sense of humor, and her friendly extraversion that makes her incredibly easily to get along with. In addition to all of her charismatic traits, Sophie can be seen on campus flaunting a personal style that has us style-crushing hard. Her looks appear effortless and ideal for whatever adventure she finds herself in. Most likely to been found in a pair of olive green Converse and her Warby Parker frames, you’ll never find her sacrificing her personality and standout style for whatever is the most common trend on campus. In admiration of her indie and down to earth look, I asked her a few questions about how she views style and what it all means to her.

HC KU: How would you describe your style?

SM: My personality is very laid back, but I Iike to have fun with my style. I usually start off with a basic look, and then I’ll throw on one staple piece to really bring the outfit together, like some sexy heels or a backless top!

HC KU: Where do you find style inspiration?

SM: I’m a huge fan of Zooey Deschanel. She’s classy and cute! I actually get my glasses style from her, as she rocks the thick frames and the classic black color of them. Her hair is so gorgeous too. It’s dark, long, and very healthy! She is my inspiration to rock the dark hair and fair skin with confidence.

HC KU: Where do you do most of your shopping?

SM: I go to Urban outfitters for my funky pieces, and then to H&M and Gap for the basics. I also get a bunch of hand-me-downs from my aunt who has a similar style to mine. It’s all the authenticity of old school clothes for free!

HC KU: What’re your favorite pieces from your closet?

SM: I have an open-backed velvet skater dress from Urban Outfitters that I love. It’s modest, yet sexy. It makes me feel untouchable! I love my converse, too. They’re casual, but so classic and practical. The KU has tons of hills, so it’s nice to have sneakers for comfort, but you still look cute at the same time!

HC KU: What’s your favorite season to dress for?

SM: Fall without a doubt! I’m originally from Minnesota, so I’ve learned to love layering clothes. I love putting on shirts, then sweatshirts, then jackets etc. I also find myself wearing jeans and chords a lot too, as they accentuate my long legs. There are endless looks to wear in the Fall.

HC KU: What’s your biggest pet peeve in terms of style?

SM: Cowboy boots! They are so uncomfortable, and the least bit feminine.

HC KU: If you could give one piece of style advice, what would it be?

SM: I’d suggest not finding clothes that fit just one style. If you see a cute shirt or dress or something that you really like, get it! You’ll have a huge variety of clothes after you collect random pieces for a while. It’s the best way to develop a personal style.

HC KU: What advice would you give to students specifically about buying clothes for their closets?

SM: Get shirts and clothes from vacations, road trips or any adventures you take. You’ll be the only one rockin’ that piece of clothing, and every time you wear it you’ll think of the adventure or trip you took! Wearable souvenirs are the best.
