Talking Style with Chic Collegiette, Shayna Rosenak

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

KU freshman Shayna Rosenak (@shaynaerin422) can be seen around Lawrence hanging out with friends or partaking in her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega; but what she’s really known for on campus is her bright and approachable personality that is paired with an incredible and eclectic sense of style. She’s the type to wear whatever she has on with confidence, and she isn’t afraid to try on something different and unique. Her style is hard to describe in a few words or to pinpoint into a single genre, since she expertly combines a multitude of different looks with grace. To try and gain a better understanding of her killer sense of fashion, I asked her a few questions regarding her style.

HC KU: How would you describe your style?

SR: I would not say that I have one specific style. Instead, I like to keep myself open to all types of styles from boho, to edgy, to preppy, and everything in between.

HC KU: Who’re your style icons?

SR: My style icons right now are Kylie Jenner and Taylor Swift. I am in love with Kylie’s edgy and grunge outfits. I love Taylor Swift’s more fun girly outfits. I especially love Taylor’s crop tops that barely show her midriff that she pairs with adorable skirts.

HC KU: Where is your favorite place to shop?

SR: My favorite places to shop are Urban Outfitters, Free People, Altar’d State, and eBay. Urban Outfitters has more of the edgy and grunge looks I like that are very unique. Then Free People and Altar’d State have all of the whimsical, flowy, boho looks that I adore. Finally, eBay is a miracle. I love to find items that would otherwise be very expensive, but I snag them for super cheap.

HC KU: What is your biggest style pet peeve?

SR: My biggest style pet peeve is when I see girls that are wearing outfits that you can just tell they are uncomfortable in. For example, if a girl wears heels that are way too high and she is struggling to walk in them, or if she is wearing a skimpy dress she has to constantly yank down, I find it so annoying. Wear an outfit that you will feel confident and beautiful in and then you won’t have to worry about not being able to walk or constantly adjusting your clothes.

HC KU: What’s one style piece that you haven’t tried yet but you want to?

SR: I really love hats, but I do not wear them that often. I really want to try to wear the panama hats that are in style right now!

HC KU: What’s your go to song or album to play while you’re getting ready?

SR: I love to listen to a wide array of music while I am getting ready. I have 3 main Pandora stations that really put me in an awesome mood. I mainly listen to Kokomo radio, Queen radio, and Elton John Radio. I literally will sing and dance all by myself listening to those stations while I get ready. They kind of distract me from getting ready quickly. I also love music from the 1950’s to 1980’s.

HC KU: What’s your favorite piece to wear when you need a confidence boost?

SR: My favorite piece that I wear when I need a confidence boost is this really adorable bright red, flowy shirt from Alter’d state. I absolutely adore red and the blouse has an awesome pop of color with girly lace and rhinestones scattered across the neckline.

HC KU: What is your style guilty pleasure?

SR: My style guilty pleasure is what I call a moo-moo. It is basically an ugly, old lady nightgown. I love to put it on right when I get back from class, and I am not ashamed to admit that I have worn it out in public when I have been too lazy to change into something else.

HC KU: High heels or flats?

SR: If I could walk in them, I would totally prefer high heels. But realistically regarding how well I can walk, I would have to choose flats.

HC KU: What style advice would you give to college students specifically?

SR:If you like something, wear it! Do not worry about what others will think of it. If you find something adorable and unique then wear it. College is a time to find yourself and establish who you are as a person. Don’t be afraid to be unique. Take inspiration from everything around you. Wear clothing that makes you feel beautiful and confident.
