The Rupi Kaur Revolution

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

Rupi Kaur, a 25 year-old author best known for her revolutionary poetry, recently released her second book- and it’s already a bestseller.

Writing about uncommon (and as the media criticized as often, uncomfortable) themes such as rape, trauma, abuse, gender, femininity, and loss, Rupi isn’t afraid to say what she feels. Brutally honest poems led to an increase in Instagram fame, and today the author has a following of 1.6 million. Her first book, milk and honey was originally self-published by Kaur, but after massive amounts of success, a publisher quickly picked it up. Radical in theme and design, milk and honey included a combination of Kaur’s minimalist illustrations and poetry.

Her second book, the sun and her flowers, was released to the public last week, and is the number two best-seller on Amazon. Gathering support from her social media followers, the long-sought after release brought much response. Whether she be addressing millennial minority women or depression, both critics and fans of Kaur agreed that she tackled grave and serious topics with grace and ease. Especially for those who can easily relate to the subjects, Kaur’s poetry is a form of therapy.

After the publication of both anthologies, an outreach of support came flooding in. Voices of the silenced, oppressed, or fearful were finally expressed. Her poetry and artwork were a form of healing that isn’t always found in traditional literature. When flipping through the pages of the two collections, it’s easy to see the pain and heartbreak pouring through the chapters. Rupi Kaur has created a revolution of not only cries for help through poetry, but a revolution for the minority female poets of the world.

If you haven’t picked up your copy, the sun and her flowers as well as milk and honey are available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and even as an eBook. Rupi Kaur is also in the middle of touring the country, and you can find tickets here: https://rupikaur.com/tour/
