podcasts are important
I personally love podcasts, and I have been listening to them ever since I got Spotify. Now it took me a while to find podcasts that I truly enjoyed, but now I often listen to podcasts more than I listen to music. Podcasts are a great way to learn new information while feeling like you’re having a personal conversation with the podcast host. Below I have listed five of my personal favorite podcasts that I often click on when I am in the mood to listen to something great. All of these podcasts are informational (in their own ways), which I enjoy because after finishing an episode I feel much smarter and like I learned something. A lot of the advice or random information I know has probably come from a podcast. I honestly think everyone should have at least one regular podcast that they keep up with. Not only do you learn something new from them, but you start to look forward to the release of a new episode.
morbid with ash kelly & alaina urquhart
Morbid is my all-time favorite podcast, and I have listened to nearly every episode. Morbid is a true crime podcast with an aunt and niece (or more fondly known as sisters) who discuss everything morbid, from ghost stories to serial killers and true crime and even natural disasters. Ash Kelly is a hairdresser by trade, while Alaina Urquhart is an autopsy technician and a New York Times bestselling author. While Ash brings the humor and opinions, Alaina brings her knowledge in the field of autopsy and her opinions from her own books. These two sisters go into depth on serial killers’ crimes like Jack the Ripper, Ted Bundy and the Memphis 3. They also go into depth in disappearance cases or controversial cases like the death of Kathleen Peterson. They also do ‘listener tales,’ where they read fans’ own experiences with true crime, ghosts and more. I have listened to plenty of true crime podcasts, but some were just not told with the correct information, or they were not told with enough respect. Morbid does both of these things while also advocating for mental health. I personally really enjoy their ghost stories and their disappearances episodes. If you are looking for a podcast that tells people’s stories and brings awareness to true crime, then this is the podcast for you, and I highly request first listening to the Jack the Ripper series.
anything goes with emma chamberlain
This was the first podcast I ever listened to, and even though it is no longer publishing new episodes, I still go back to this podcast whenever I need some advice or just want to listen to someone talk. I have always loved Emma Chamberlain and her aesthetic, and her podcast is the perfect representation of her aesthetic. This is a warm and cozy podcast where Emma talks about quite literally anything. Sometimes this includes advice sessions, what she’s been loving recently, story times or anything else. Emma speaks in such a thoughtful way, and all of her opinions I take into consideration. She is both funny and unfiltered, allowing me to feel comfortable in her presence. I go to this podcast when I need some unconventional advice, and Emma always provides the best advice. This show is very nostalgic for me, and I really enjoy going back and listening to some of the older episodes. I would highly recommend this podcast to anyone who loves to hear other people talk. Emma talks in a way that makes me feel like I am a part of the conversation, but she isn’t monotonous, making her podcast very interesting and easy to pay attention to or drone out while working on homework. I would start with an episode of ‘things I’ve been loving recently’ and the ‘finding comfort in yourself’ advice session.
the rest is history with tom holland & dominic sandbrook
This podcast is for history nerds and even those who love some occasional history. The Rest is History is an informational podcast about historical events. The hosts, Dominic Sandbrook and Tom Holland (no, not that Tom Holland), go into deep and educational dives into some of history’s most infamous moments, from the Hundred Years’ War to the life story of Mary Queen of Scots. They even have an episode of history’s most famous dogs. If you have a niche historical event that you are obsessed with, I guarantee you, The Rest is History has done an episode over it. The hosts bring a bit of humor to their podcast but mainly focus on telling the true accounts of a historical event and will often go into detail over the logistics of the event. This is a great podcast to listen to while cleaning or driving because you can learn some new history without having to physically sit down and read something about that historical event. My personal favorite episode series was about Odysseus and The Odyssey, which helped me be more informed on the tale after watching Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. I assure anyone who is interested in this podcast that after listening to an episode, you will feel smarter and more confident to talk about historical events.
the broski report with brittany broski
If you’re looking for a lighter and more comedic podcast, Brittany Broski’s “The Broski Report” might be for you. The Broski Report is run by popular social media figure Brittany Broski, and if you haven’t heard of Brittany, your life might change. Brittany is a hilarious character who takes everything with a grain of seriousness and a lot of humor. If you are having a bad day or need to stay awake on a long car ride, The Broski Report is perfect. This podcast is a bit hard to explain because Brittany talks about everything. You may think that this podcast is silly or dumb because of Brittany’s personality, but Brittany often gets into really serious topics like mortality. But even though Brittany is a very funny person, she takes topics like this very seriously. This podcast has reminded me that it is okay to be myself and be funny. That you can still be funny but also educated on important topics. I love to listen to The Broski Report when I am with friends for a good laugh or when I’m having a bad day. The Broski Report is a good reminder that even when you are having a bad day, there is always something to laugh about, no matter how small. I would suggest starting with “Carrie Bradshaw and Lord Byron” or “Talking Ouija Boards with my Ghost Hunting Mother.”
good hang with amy poehler
Good Hang with Amy Poehler is a celebrity podcast where every week Amy has a celebrity come into her studio where they share stories about careers, mutual friends and what has been making these celebrities laugh. Amy Poehler is an incredible host who has great questions and is a great conversationalist. If you are looking for a podcast that is more conversational, then this is the podcast for you. Amy Poehler has had guests from Sandra Bullock to Robert De Niro to Keke Palmer. One of my personal favorite episodes is Amy Poehler and Ina Garten, and I highly suggest you start with that episode. This is just a casual, feel-good podcast that I really enjoy listening to as background noise when working on homework.
End of the episode
These five podcasts are in my regular loop when it comes to listening to podcasts. With each of these podcasts, I have learned so many important lessons, and I look forward to new episodes every week. I truly believe that everyone should have a regular podcast that they listen to, and if you are looking for one, I suggest starting with one of these.
