A Month to Raise Awareness for LGBT: Gaypril

Many college campuses across the country have adopted April as the month to celebrate and bring awareness to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans* (LGBT) community. Traditionally, October is LGBT history month and June is gay pride month, but Gaypril combines both into one month that can be celebrated during the academic year. Queers and Allies at the University of Kansas participates in Gaypril and hosts 11 upcoming pride events. Check them out below for details.

What: Burlesque Night: Enjoy a short performance followed by a crash course in burlesque dancing with audience participation.When: April 2 at 10 p.m.Where: Wilde’s Chateau

What: Bible Defense Workshop: With Ecumenical Campus Ministries, Lutheran Campus Ministries at KU and Wesley KU, discuss the eight passages in the Bible used against the LGBT community. Learn how to counteract those passages and how to use the Bible as a source of acceptance for all people.When: April 8 at 7 p.m.Where: Westwood Lutheran Student Center

What: Rainbow Shabbat: In conjunction with KU Hillel, learn about the intersectionality of Judaism and LGBT culture over a provided dinner with vegetarian and vegan options.When: April 11 at 5:30 p.m.Where: 722 New Hampshire St.

What: Trans* Talk: Attend a panel event to hear from members of the trans* community. The audience is welcome to ask the panelists questions in a safe learning environment.When: April 15 at 7 p.m.Where: Sabatini Multicultural Resource Center

What: Tea at Three Takeover/Gala: Queers and Allies will take over Tea at Three to promote awareness and help educate students. Come enjoy some rainbow cake, cookies and tea.When: April 17 at 3 p.m.Where: Fourth floor of the Kansas Union

What: Brown Bag Drag: Watch a drag show performed by drag queen Daisy Bucket and student performers.When: April 18 at 12 p.m.Where: Outside of the Kansas Union

What: Sex-Ed Bootcamp: Participate in a boot camp informing students about various topics in sexual education.

What: HIV Testing Day: Get tested for HIV with a free and confidential screening.

When: April 30 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.Where: Kansas Union

What: Kiss-In: Promote same-sex love through a kiss-in event.
